Description

A curio among curios. Back in 2002, fresh off working on books such as Grip The Strange World of Men for Vertigo, Gilbert Hernandez took on a 100% mainstream in-continuity assignment for DC comics. He recently stated on Cartoonist Kayfabe that the whole exercise � a 6 issue run of Birds of Prey (#50-55) � ended up being much harder to do than he first expected, and that he was embarrassed by the result. Still, centred mostly on non-powered super-heroines dialogue (Batgirl, Oracle) and whimsical Silver Age DC characters such as Metamorpho, it reads like nothing else. Casey Jones and Jose Marzan Jr�s bouncy, cartoony style is pitch-perfect and channels a kind of fun reminiscent of a more clement era.

The dialogue is kind of more initimate and more than we'd usually get if it was someone else who might have just cut it out of the script to tighten the story. It's a reason why they'd exect you to read Love and Rockets from the start and why you can jump on to BOP from almost any issue. It looks pretty fun though, but still wouldn't pass the Bechdel test.

Metamorpho is exactly who you'd suspect to see in a Beto written DC book. I remember awaiting these issues when it was announced he would step in as writer and he definitely had all the right influences to make it a fun run. By the end of his run I was glad he took a short detour into the DC Universe but eager for him to turn his full attention back to L&R.
