Description

Here's a great Dave Cockrum drawing from 1975 that I recently picked up via Heritage. Unfortunately I don't know anything about the art, so please let me know if you've ever seen this before.

It's drawn on thick standard size art board and based on the level of detail, I'm assuming it was intended for publication although I have no idea if it ever was. It's possible this was intended for one of Marvel's black and white magazines, or possibly a fanzine or paperback book illustration. It's not really Dave's typical inking style, but it's got a lot of great detail and really nicely done.

Cockrum may simply have seen a copy of some of the Gothic Romance comics or some Gothic Romance paperbacks and felt inspired to draw something in that vein. A fun early career piece, nonetheless!

Maybe -- it definitely looks like it belongs on a gothic romance paperback! I'm just sorry Dave is no longer around to ask.

Lovely illustration style! Crosshatches the dark and eerie nighttime setting into the piece!

Beautiful, it is clearly Cockrum and yet it shows an unusual style for him. Great find!
