Description

Midnight Men is one of Chaykin's mini series from the 90's and continues to be a favorite of mine. It's rumored to be a unused Batman pitch(There was a Batman story Chaykin was working on with Michael Golden), or TV series pitch (works into the timeline), regardless it's a fun LA 90's noir crime story that has some incredible Chaykin art. Lots of cool zip textures, handsome/stylish men, beautiful women, sex, double crosses and crime. All with Chaykin's brilliant layouts and his Toth/Bernie Fuchs inspired illustration, along with his penchant for structure. I like this page a lot because it features this great close up of the leading man, Chaykin's classic leading man- a little Burt Lancaster, a little James Garner with a hint of 90's Bruce Willis in there as well. Good Chaykin. It's nice to collect these Chaykin pages because they are very much art in the service of comic production, medium and message. Hopefully someday we'll get a nice reprint of this series, to have some nice editions of all of the 'Howard Chaykin Library' would be a treat.

Chaykin's Heavy Hitting Punisher! He's got a weapons stash like we have art on the walls. That old school wood paneling zip is a rarity to see on the comic page. The way he controls facial expressions and spot shadows gave a stark lighting for more hard boiled grit.
