Description

If comparing Chaykin to Miller (as one can do since they are contemporaries, former studio mates, iconoclasts, amazing storytellers and decent draftsmen), then I would contend that American Flagg is comparable FM's Ronin (interesting, groundbreaking nonsense) and The Shadow is The Dark Knight Returns. It's the work that Chaykin will be forever known for, and was the first Chaykin work I was exposed to. I remember my 13 year old mind trying to comprehend what the hell was going on( I couldn't afford issue one so was stuck with trying to understand the story only owning issues 2 and 4), I believe it's incredibly interesting, fun, re-readable and incredibly well designed and executed. This page has Shadow with an Uzi, getting tossed by his doppelg�nger enraged, ready to murder him for the death of his 'father' (The confusion in this book wasn't helped by 3 characters who looked almost exactly the same.) Chaykin's design and storytelling are on display here on this incredible action page, nearing the climax of the series. A fun piece to own and now I'm going to read 'the shadow' again. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA an aside: As a book collector, I believe we're deserving of a nice 'Deluxe Edition' of this book DC Comics, if you're listening, or whoever the hell publishes The Shadow now? NickyB? Shell out those dollars and get us a nice big reprint with lots of bts extras, printed on fancy paper. 1986 the 3 books people talk about in every interview are DKR, Watchmen and Chaykin's 'The Shadow' so we really shouldn't be stuck with DC's old TPB or the oversaturated/too slick paper one (sorry nick) that Dynamite put out a few years ago.

Chaykin is so bold in this story and there was a lot of talk that it was just as strong as DKR in its sophistication of storytelling to revamp the Shadow for the new dark era!
