DescriptionDr. Walter Newell, the world's foremost oceanographer, first appeared as a pain in Namor's side in Tales to Astonish in 1967. Two years later, he would don the costume and take on the super hero identity of "Sting-Ray" in Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner #19. This is page 18 from that book by Marie Severin and Johnny Craig and is signed by Severin in white ink in the upper left hand corner of the page.In this page we see a knock-down, drag-out fight between the prince of Atlantis and Stingray! The good doctor seems to have the advantage as Namor tries to flee, damaging Stingray's armor on his way out, but not his electrical blast. Unfortunately, Stingray accidentally takes out a support for the bridge above! I have no idea why Stingray's costume appears red and yellow throughout the issue, but is correctly colored on the cover. As a character collector, this page will be a capstone of my collection but it is significant for other reasons. It's the only silver age page I own so far and, thus, the oldest page in my collection. It's currently the only page I own by a woman artist. It is also the most expensive piece I've purchased to date. What a way to cap off an already amazing art collecting year! Update: I picked this up from ComicConnect at OAX 2025 and got a better scan after returning home! Social/Sharing |

This one has it all, the art, the subject matter, the action. What a wonderful example of bronze age awesomeness.

This could only belong to The Stingray himself. Cool page!

Stingray GRAIL! Namor is utterly outclassed in his own title in character design and in powers by this upstart.

A gorgeous looking page all around. Those Namor Stingray battle panels are just great, and historic. My favorite hionestly might be that Brooklyn Bridge panel though, love that perspective. And to end on the panel close up of the character you're all about, from his first appearance issue - chef's kiss! Huge congrats! I'm sure you're itching at it's eventual arrival to it's rightful place tempting fate with the early post but the excitement is justified lol

The funny part is that the bridge in that panel is a stat haha.

had a feeling it was with the tape/residue line sorta visible but it still looks great and presumably the figures below it are hand drawn art. I'm just a sucker for NYC landmarks especially in vintage Marvel books

I'm a Namor character collector I know how hard it is to get OA from this period . I'm after a Buscema for my own PC and even 80s Avengwrs pages can hurt the wallet . Congrats on getting such an important piece in collection .

Thanks, I had to fight for this one and it's now going to be one of the most important pieces in my collection.
