Description

A wonderful gift from my pal Cliff Chiang. Once upon a time, I owned the Dave Stevens original of this piece. I let it go after I got the painting by him, but always missed it. There's a fun story about how the piece was created (it was basically a collab between Stevens and Mike Kaluta). I told the story to Cliff, and the fact that I missed it. A while later he surprised me with this. Thanks Cliff!

It's the kind of piece that would be put up on the wall in the hanger where the bar is for the pilots. Well balanced and symmetrical retro framing (probably what Kaluta designed) for the Rocketeer to aim high and bring the spirit of the pilots that risked their lives for the romance of flying. That was what Stevens most likely intended. Chiang's linework unifies the adventure and the old Hollywood glamor that the Rocketeer was a love letter to.

Interesting because looks like Cliff is trying a different approach to his otherwise very clean and streamlined style. Great subject too! Congrats.
