DescriptionFor fans of a certain age, Secret Wars was the story all others were compared to, as it was Marvel's first ever company-wide crossover event. I was already a fan of Captain America, thanks to J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck's run in the early 1980s, but reading Cap in Secret Wars cemented it for me. There was something about seeing this non-powered hero take command of some of the most powerful beings in the MU that made an imprint on a young Rick.As an OA fan, getting a page from Secret Wars featuring Cap has been #1 on my list for years. And this one is a great example of what I love about Cap... he's a leader that sees something others may not, yet in this case, he's subtly swaying others to make them think it was their idea all along. And what a room! The Avengers, FF, X-Men, Hulk and (black uniform) Spidey all follow Cap's lead. I couldn't ask for a better page or a better way to end the year. From the auction listing: Mike Zeck penciled (and after comments by Zeck, Beatty and Rubinstein, we are 99% sure he also inked) this character-packed page from the penultimate issue of the beloved 1984-1985 crossover series, Marvel Super-Heroes: Secret Wars! It features the vast majority of the Marvel superheroes who were featured in massive storyline including the black costume Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four (Mister Fantastic, Thing and Human Torch), the new Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter), the Hulk, the Avengers (Captain America, Wasp, Thor, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), Hawkeye and Iron Man (James Rhodes) and the X-Men (Wolverine, Storm, Professor X, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Rogue) and the X-Men's greatest foe and sometimes ally, Magneto. Captain America is leading an intense discussion about how the gathered heroes should proceed to handle Doctor Doom, who has stolen the power of the all-powerful cosmic being known as the Beyonder. The FF, having the most experience with Doom, are the first to share their opinions. Reed Richards (realizes) that no matter how benevolent Doom appears to be, it is imperative that he be stopped before it is too late. The heroes assembled together by Cap make this page a standout! Magneto and the X-Men are back in the fold and Cap leads because has the seniority over all of them! Secret Wars is a grand crossover event that made new fans to strengthen the entirety of Marvel titles.

I am "of a certain age" where this series was jaw-dropping and all I could think about. Even had (and still have) the Marvel TTRPG and the module for Secret Wars.
I will say this...I dont thinks Cap is, as you say "subtly swaying others to make them think it was their idea all along.". I read it as his confidence as a leader but also his humility to defer to others in the room. That is what makes him a powerful leader and someone people are willing to follow.
Either way....what a page! Congratulations!!!

Great point and I can see that, too. Cap definitely has many admirable traits and humility is one of them!

So good, Rick! Yup, Secret Wars...can't beat it IMO. Got a full cast here while still being Cap centric. Definitely in the right collection. Huge congrats on hitting this #1 target in a BIG way!

When I read this originally I thought, wouldn't you heal your face if you suddenly got the power to do so? I expect Cap spends his spare time outside plastic surgery clinics with a placard. Ironic as he's enhanced himself. This is coming from a big Cap fan by the way. I suppose they had to get a big fight to finish the series. It would have been a bit dull to just see Doom transporting them home and then ending with him going to rescue his mother.

I can see what you are saying, but I saw Cap's point not that Doom shouldn't have healed his face, but doing so was a very human thing to do, and Doom claimed he had transcended humanity. And if he still had human desires with all that power, well... As you said, it made for a climactic battle, one which many of us didn't see coming at the beginning of the story. Thanks for your thoughts and comments!

I forgot to add that Reed loves stirring it up too. Great artwork on the page.
