Description

Dave Cockrum had his first "Pro" work published by Warren Magazines in 1971. I put Pro in quotes because these early black and white stories are a bit amateurish as compared with the work he'd be doing only a year or so later. Dave credited Neal Adams for getting him work at Warren as well as advising him on corrections to make.

This page is from Dave's 3rd published story in Creepy #40 (which followed his first works in Vampirella #40 and Creepy #39). This story, called Swamp Demon, is actually the first published work written by Dave as well as his first published artwork to feature wash tones. While the penciling may not be his best work, I do think the toned inking is fantastic.

Dave would go on to DC in 1972 and his talent would quickly blossom under the influence of Murphy Anderson.

Very fun to look at! The early work is probably where an artist goes over the top to make their mark as you can see Cockrum is not letting any detail slip here.
