Description

For a brief, golden moment--about 1968 to 1970--John Buscema ranked with Kirby and Adams in the pantheon of superhero artists. His on-the-ground synthesis of both artists with his own expressive anatomy and splendid emotionality seemed to inject an adult seriousness into the genre. Neither his plots nor the scripting of Lee or Thomas were able to rise to the maturity of the artwork, and Buscema seemed to lose his artistic ambition thereafter. This page is a stepchild example: Buscema was called in to finish the second half of the book when Gil Kane couldn't meet deadline. It is blessed with sympathetic inks by Dan Adkins, who succeeded Sal Buscema on John's Silver Surfer run, and inked the superb Sub-Mariner 6-8.

Love the action and hero on the ropes that Buscema does! The layouts show off Captain Marvel taking a beating in body language and facial expression!
