DescriptionNot being a fan of Cerebus I wasn't expecting to find anything of interest when perusing Gerhard's portfolio at his table during OAX '25. Lo and behold, I came across this highly detailed Creature from the Black Lagoon piece. Being a big fan of the the classic Universal Monsters, I snatched it up. It was produced in the Gerhard style with lots of detail and crosshatching and measures 9" x 12". Per Gerhard this was used in Monster Atlas I'm guessing Volume 1 the Americas, since I believe the original movie was supposed to take place in the Amazon. The illustration was based on a photograph from the original Universal film which was also used on the cover of a Crestwood book dated 1981. I was not familiar with this photograph and initially thought the art was an original composition. Extremely happy to have this very different example from a great artist.Social/Sharing |

Vry fun piece with the personality showing through the monster face. It's a little asymmetrical by design in the face as well as the composition having the Creature framed on one side. As it makes you take notice o what he's reaching for when lumberingly climbing to the surface. All in the Gerhard illustration work that turns anything into a classic.

Didn't know Gerhard drew anything like this until I saw the portfolio at OAX. Such an interesting piece, and the signature Gerhard execution and style is on full display.

Exactly what I thought. That's why I figured it was kismet that I picked it up, given my interests.
