Description

Here's a recent inking commission I completed and a monster of one at that! The size is 23"x29" on thick, textured board over the original pencils by Gonzalo Mayo. The subject matter has some of the heroes from the DeathMate event which crossed over the Valiant and the Image universes in 1993. It was my first time inking Mayo and this client, Deon Griffith's first time hiring me. I dealt with a lot of challenges on this one like rotating this large piece on my drawing board (it's not foldable like a traditional double-page spread would be) so the edges got worn from hitting my spotlight lamps. It was tough getting clean lines with the rough board texture. Erasing the heavy pencils left a lot of inked areas faded forcing me to go back in where needed. Much of the graphite would not erase so when I did clean up with white paint I had to cover up the worst of that. And the size prohibited me from scanning it on my large bed scanner, ergo the pic. While I made edits and changes in the art I was for the most part faithful in spite of questionable anatomy/proportions/tangents/gratuitous noodling. I've usually honored the penciller's rendering/stylings as that's how the client usually prefers it inked and to redraw everything to be realistic and positioned better would have taken way more time and payment than the client would want as it wouldn't quite be a Mayo job anymore. I would save those that kind of time & effort for pencil breakdown jobs. Completed August 2, 2024.

CHARACTERS: Shaft from Youngblood, Valiant's X-O Manowar and is that Shadowman in the center?, WildC.A.T.s' Zeolot, Valiant's Bloodshot and WildC.A.T.s' Grifter and Valiant's Turok. I'm not sure about the top right character but prolific client Damon Owens thinks it's Cabbot from Liefeld's Bloodstrike comic..
