DescriptionSky Masters of the Space Force was a newspaper strip created by Jack Kirby and writer Dave Wood in September 1958. The two were working together at DC on Challengers of the Unknown at this time. The incredible Wallace Wood was inking that book for Kirby and seemed like a logical fit on Sky Masters as well. This strip was from the "Mayday Shannon" storyline and features Sky Masters, Doctor Royer, and Shannon. The blend of Kirby and Wood is a match made in heaven for me. This piece seems to possess a nice bit of each man's genius. Bold King Kirby figures coupled with Wally's elegant inking ability. Absolutely love the machinery in the backgrounds. A feature included in so many of both Kirby and Wood's individual works. As a bonus it contains Jack Kirby's signature in pencil along the bottom margin of the art. This was a special purchase for me in several ways. The first example in my collection from either of these two legendary comic masters. Made even better by the decision to have this delivered by ComicConnect at the recent OAX show in Orlando. I saw this auction offered during a preview here on CAF. Much gratitude to Harrison Kassen and Micah Spivak for help in getting this to Florida for me, and Bill Cox for all he does for our hobby. Traveled to OAX with a custom made frame in hand and was able to properly share this with friends minutes after receiving it! That will be an added memory associated to this piece every time I view it. Image size is 18" x 5.5". Social/Sharing |

Thanks Kavi!
Something also new on this one. Had to switch to a single panel as the main image. It cropped terribly in the app when first using the whole strip. Not a problem with pages, but definitely a thing with horizontal wide artwork!

Fantastic mix of the war, sci-fi, and romance books that Kirby had worked on. Wood enhances the sci-fi machinery, the handsomeness of the figures, and refines the bold Kirby storytelling.

A really fantastic strip with elements of both Wood's and Kirby's styles. Fantastic pickup.

Thank you for letting me see this in person!! I agree. Kirby/Wood is a perfect combination. Their styles complement each other so well. In addition to the Kirby machinery, Wood's elegant brush and line work on the hair and fur coat is outstanding! Huge congratulations!

Stunning Sky Masters comic strip by Jack Kirby and Wally Wood! It opens with pilot Sky Masters talking with one of the scientists developing new space craft. They talk about the failed tests on a new space ship like it was a human. The strip features beautifully drawn panels with interesting looking characters. I love the look of the scientist in the first panel. The drawing is just superb, no less than you'd expect frrom a strip drawn by Kirby and Wood. There are interesting backgrounds with Kirby-esque machinery. The girl is as attractive as any in Flash Gordon. I'm not sad the strip failed because if it had succeeded, we might never have had the Marvel Age we all adore. Great pick-up, congrats!

Excellent point Bill!
Had Kirby prevailed in the lawsuit with Jack Schiff does he ever join Marvel? It's' a true "What If???" story that none of us would have enjoyed to see.

Great comic strip by two comic greats, and as someone not as familiar with comic history pre-silver age, I'm still amazed they worked together, on a comic strip no less. Congrats on the pickup!
