DescriptionI won this page at auction on eBay from the inker, John Dell. He put it in the mail December 7th, with an expected delivery date of December 18th. The page never arrived, and Dell didn’t file a claim with the USPS until January 17th, the day before eBay’s money back guarantee expired. He also didn’t insure the page beyond USPS’ $100 included (suffice it to say, the sale price was quite a bit more than that). Dell offered me several lesser pages in exchange, the combined value of which was significantly less than the lost page, and tried to offer me a refund of less than 2/3 of the sale amount of the page.I found the page had already been posted on CAF, and sold by John Dell to the other collector as an original piece. When I contacted Dell about it, he became angry and shouted at me on the phone that I was trying to “ruin his reputation”- the other collector let me know, after talking to Dell, that the piece he had was a print on Bristol board that Dell had presented as original art and sold him for the original art price, though he had only found this out because of my reaching out to him. So Dell had sold the original page twice, and mine, which he insists is the actual original page, is the one that got “lost in the mail.” And neither the other collector nor I have the original page. I am a trusting person, but I think this story doesn’t quite feel right. In short, buyer beware purchasing items from John Dell, and if you see this splash in the wild, I’d appreciate your help in making its way to its home in my collection. UPDATE: I’ve been made aware of several other situations regarding Dell selling additional copies of originals, or second inked versions of covers he’s already sold. At this point, I wouldn’t buy anything with his name on it as an inker. Happy to provide proof of every single piece of what I’ve described above for anyone curious or considering buying a page from him. His eBay is “the-inking-thing”, and I wouldn’t buy from him under any circumstances. The real bummer for me is that Jimmy Cheung is one of my OA heroes, and not to have the piece from him when his splashy Spidey images are so few and far between is devastating. I haven’t posted to the Facebook “buyer beware” group because I’m not on Facebook, but if anyone wants to post and direct their comments and questions to my CAF, be my guest. Social/Sharing |

Really sorry to hear about Dell being up to his shenanigans, Casey. But how did you settle the transaction. What did you accept in return?

Unfortunately, nothing that was offered was equal value. Plus, after the experience I described, how could I trust that any original page that was offered as a substitute was an actual original and not a print on Bristol? I had to move to resolve it with my financial institution instead. Just wanted to make other collectors aware, so they didn't have the same experience I did.

So, did your financial institution get your money back in full? And fyi, Dell has a history of doing things that aren't exactly "cool" when it comes to selling original art. Feel free to go to my gallery and read my description of the Arwyn sketch I got from him.

Sad to hear about Dell and should be given more attention. I hope it's not bluelines which would make the situation even more complicated.

That is absolute garbage and appalling for an inker to stoop so low.
Are you able to notify ebay that he is selling fake originals? There must be some way to report him on there.

One of my friends have bought art off ebay too and one was much more expensive than this page. And now, he has to question the authenticity of the published art. Absolute bullshit going on.

I hope you get your refund in full but you (and other concerned collectors) should seek legal recourse, at least report him to the competent (even local) authorities, make some noise (which you are) and lighten him up on social media. CAF should become involved to resolve this as he has a presence on this site.

What a horrible experience, so sorry to hear it. Sounds like a track record of fraud, I'd consider sharing those cases with more than just CAF or FB.

Having been ripped off by an artist (now deceased, not aided by me I hasten to add!!) and a famous dealer for considerable amounts of money, you have my sympathy. Hope you get some money back. I never got anything back.

Sorry to hear about this whole experience. I had considered buying something from his account before, but now I'm glad I dodged that bullet. Still, this whole situation stinks, and hopefully you were able to get some sort of resolution from your financial institution to make you (close to) whole.
