DescriptionDark Knight Returns #4 Splash Homage with TMNTArt by Tricky Trapster (Derrick Tharp) Tricky did this piece and sent it to me nearly 6 years ago I believe. It's the piece that got me excited about getting commissions from him from time to time, not only to support him as a friend, but because I genuinely enjoy his work. I never had a proper scan for it (just a terrible low light photo). I decided to correct that and take a fresh shiny brand new scan of it last night. It's a really cool homage to one of the more recognizable splash images from The Dark Knight Returns (issue 4), but with TMNT instead! Love how it looks. I don't have to get into why I'll never own the real splash from DKR, but I certainly think an homage like this I get more enjoyment out of than a straight up recreation. There's also some pencil rough layout/figure stuff on back which was an abandoned approach with Krang I believe, added that to additional images, even as a rough it looks kinda cool. Wonderful homage. I like the juxtaposition in style between the horse, with its more Miller-esque style, and the more cartoony rider. Skillfully done.

I'm with you, man. Line for line recreations are boring. Mainly because it's just grind work, because there's zero creativity involved due to the creativity already having been put into the original piece. Homages are fun call backs to the originals, but also offer creativity with different elements from the original layout being changed or swapped out for new ones. Tricky did a really nice job with this one, especially for a Batman AND Turtles fan!
