Description

I'd been wanting to do this piece on and off for about a year. How I approached this piece which was a little different. I did a quick 10 minute study of the John Byrne original cover (just to figure out how he handled the 3 point perspective...which I could feel but was curious if in fact all the buildings went to one singular lower vanishing point) and they did not...that was really the extent of the study. I then put John's piece away and spent about 10 hours (a full day laying this out on my own) I would occasionally check his piece to see things (ok his pose shows the bottom of both feet, the body must be ALL black and still work bleeding into the buildings) I used those key "icons" as a mental checklist of things that made his piece ultimately work or complete the challenge.

By the end of the day I had NOTHING I liked. 10 hours and I basically finished the day thinking ok I just basically spent a FULL and LONG day doing a piece with nothing to show for it. I woke up the next morning a bit mad at myself and obviously wondering what I was going to draw... I just said screw it. Give it one more shot. Boom I had the pose on the first try. Dropped it onto my original background idea and it worked pretty well....and then I spent about 16 more hours penciling and inking it.

after John Byrne to be clear. I rarely sign my pieces. (I can sign this for you and add the "after Byrne" if you'd like...if not I can sign it on the back with the same denotation (your call) so it's no slight to JB. I almost never sign my stuff and like the art to be my signature in most case. Spectacular spider-man 101 cover homage.

piece is 11X17 and penciled and inked by me on 2 ply comics bristol board....no blue line or grey line/ inked over my original pencils.
