DescriptionThe old EC books have a very special place in my heart. They were the stories that I feel solidified my love for horror and was my gateway to dig deeper into the historic aspects of the genre.EC in my opinion housed some of the greatest talents to ever grace a comic page and the company itself had such a fascinating history. Despite these stories being generations apart from me, I can't help but feel nostalgia when I read these fantastic tales (perhaps due to EC being some of the first comics I picked up when I started reading). When reading these stories I would be most drawn to the work of "Ghastly" Graham Ingels. His artistic aesthetic of horror to me was just absolutely awe inspiring. I absolutely found it fascinating how he drew figures almost like they were melting wax. I also found that despite the subject matter I always found his work to be hauntingly beautiful; like sitting on the stoop of a long forgotten mausoleum and enjoying the glow of the full moon.I somehow find comfort in these often creepy tales; haha! Ever since seeing his work for the first time I vowed that if I were ever able to acquire an EC piece it would be from Ghastly. For me this page is a major milestone as I never thought that I would ever acquire an EC title page. Major thanks to Mr. Bechara and Mr. Howland for the art and good time chatting. Featured on CAF Update #246. Thanks as always to Bill & Chris for the awesome and insightful commentary! Social/Sharing |

Ghastly and Great! Grotesque and Beautiful! Horrific and Humorous! All these contrasts made EC such an American thing.

"Hauntingly beautiful" about sums it up. Continue to take comfort in the creepy. You have an excellent eye.

That's a huge pickup man! A very nice PCH title page by Ingels. Every panel is fantastic, and a cool title too. Congrats on adding a Tales From The Crypt example, an important piece of comic book history and meaningful to your collector journey.

A Tales From The Crypt title page featuring the old witch by Graham Ingels. No other Horror comic art could be more satisfying. I knew you were holding out for something like this and I knew you were heading out to the LA Comic Art Con, but wasn't sure you'd be able to find one you liked enough. So happy you pulled it off, Dave, what an amazing addition to your already great art collection!

Thanks you so much for the kind words Ruben! I am ecstatic about this page. I was definitely holding out not purchasing a new piece since late last year and truthfully for thatt time I just really didnt see anything that quite tickled my fancy. With the art show coming up, I had this idea in my head to take a few pieces where I had multiple examples from the same artist or that didnt quite fit my collection and to consolidate them into one bigger piece that was for the most part no comprimise. I actually had a different piece in mind that I knew would be there as Ive seen it in past shows, but while waiting and flipping through a portfolio I caught eye of this instead and said this was it (after much deliberation though choosing between this and other piece).

So cool that you had your eye on the page you knew you would see again, but then saw and decided to go with this one instead. So, are you saying that you ultimately were able to acquire it by trading a bunch of other pieces from your collection, or did you still have to pay cash?

Yup i was over the moon when i flipped to the page that held this piece. I traded about 5 pieces with a little cash on top. ( one of the pages was my other EC page, so this felt like an upgrade of that page) haha.

Oh, that's great! You get to upgrade your page plus part with a handful of pieces that you felt didn't quite fit your core collection, without having to go to the hassle of trying to sell all of those pages or ship them off to auction and risk losing cash that way. Sounds like a quick and efficient way to get what you wanted and curate the collection a little bit. Well done, man, congrats!

Yikes! Utterly stunning yet horrrific page from one of the greatest EC artists ever--Graham Ingels! It's amazing to me how much we modern readers enjoy these old 1950's horror comics. But there's truly nothing quite like them around today which may be why we modern readers still get a jolt of excitement when we look at EC Comics. This page is a stunner. Ingels' art here is both creepy and yet beautiful. I loved your description that he "drew figures almost like they were melting wax." I couldn't describe it better myself. Fantastic pick-up, congrats!

Thanks so much Bill. I agree; nothing like EC really, they were so ahead of their time. Also I appreciate all their historical significance. As always I enjoyed reading your insight, and always appreciate and enjoy your comments!
