DescriptionCover dated September 1998.It may be hard to believe today, but there was a time when Star Wars had largely fallen out of the public consciousness. After Return of the Jedi left theaters, we still had the Marvel comics, the toys, a couple of cartoon series and two terrible made-for-TV Ewoks movies. But those were gone within a couple of years, leaving the latter half of the 1980s into the 1990s a mostly Star Wars-free affair. That changed in 1991 with the publication of Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. It was a direct sequel to the movie trilogy, featuring the characters that nearly every boy I knew from my generation loved. I was in high school when all three of Zahn’s sequel trilogy novels came out, and it was a frequent topic of conversation among my friends and acquaintances. All of us agreed that what helped make the new books so enjoyable were the new antagonists introduced by Zahn, particularly Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Emperor’s force-wielding assassin, Mara Jade. The latter survived Zahn’s sequel trilogy to appear in further novels and comic books that were the primary source of new Star Wars material through the 1990s and continuing through the age of the prequel movie trilogy and beyond. Unfortunately, when Disney purchased Lucasfilm one of the first things they did was declare that all of the novels and comic books published prior to the acquisition were no longer canon. While certain elements that Disney initially wiped away have made their way back including Thrawn, Mara Jade remains consigned to “Legends”, which is what Disney calls the Star Wars material that they won’t acknowledge as being within continuity. So, this page is therefore from a miniseries that is no longer canon, which is too bad because it was quite enjoyable. The late Carlos Ezquerra did a wonderful job with this book, bringing his well-established talent for science fiction to the Star Wars universe. Will Mara Jade ever be back? I would never completely count a good character down, but at the same time, I don’t want her coming back if Disney can’t do it properly. I’m the meantime, go read this miniseries if you’re a fan of Zahn’s sequel trilogy, which in my head is the only real sequel trilogy. Social/Sharing |

I love me some Carlos. The good news is that with Disney doing their best to go bankrupt, Star Wars may soon be sold off by them and the new owners might reconsider one of the many, many, many Disney dreadful decisions.

Great splash! I really enjoyed the Mara Jade character through the original Heir To The Empire Timothy Zahn trilogy and subsequent material like the Dark Horse comics. So far Admiral Thrawn has been brought into "canon" from "legends" but I tend to not lean on either way to categorize Star Wars content myself. There's definately some misinformation and/or misunderstanding from many as that George Lucas never considered every novel and/or comic book that came out before he sold the company part of his official "canon" rather than just offshoot material that existed. Personally to me a good story is a good story, canon or not. The way they have used Thrawn in Animation, live action, comics, and novels in this newer era I have personally enjoyed so far. I think Mara Jade would be tougher to bring in but I guess you never know, since even Disney is doing non canon stories now in animation and books.

Yeah, I assume that if Mara Jade were ever brought back, there'd need to be some deviations from what was established in what is now called "Legends". Maybe give Zahn a crack at it.

That would be cool, Zahn has written like 6 new Thrawn novels in the last 6-8 years, I have not read them all yet though as there's way too many things to catch up on in this new era lol

Yeah, I have all of those Thrawn novels sitting in my "need to read" stack for way too long now. I did read the comic book adaptations that were made of two of them, and they were good.

Do you own splash page of Mara Jade?
I've been away so long
I may go Zahn and lose my way
Do you own splash page of Mara Jade?
I'm going back to find some piece of art of Mara Jade
OA for a great big art day
Put a hundred Thrawn and buy the art
In a week, maybe two, they'll take you to War
Weeks turn into years, how quick they pass
And all Dark Horse that never were
At Lucas art and pumping gas
You can still believe in Mara Jade
They've got Carlos in space
There'll be a place where Legends stay
I was born and raised on Mara Jade
I'm going back to find some piece of art of Mara Jade

You're clearly channeling here Burt Bacharach's rage at Disney ignoring the Zahn trilogy.

First Jolli, then Shira, then Mara, will Chelli be next? Why can't we keep the EU ladies around? Canon or not, this is a banger of a splash.

I wanted this one as I also loved the zahn trilogy. Also his thrawn was menacingly cold and calculating. A true villain

Stunning image of Mara Jade...! As a collector of the WEG RPG's art, I a a believer. We've got Thrawn and Rukh et al., now bring on Mara.
