DescriptionDuring the Covid lockdown period, Steve Mannion had a big creative spurt in which he expanded on the Fearless Dawn universe in a way that only he could. I believe he ended up with four or five books at various stages of completion, adding a slew of new characters and bringing back some old ones, eventually joining them together and forming the monster-fighting Team 8.Unfortunately, Asylum Press, the publisher he usually works with, decided to start drip-feeding reprints of his older material right at this same time, so most of the material has been held back, still waiting for publication. Against this backdrop Steve decided to self-publish one the books last year, The Battle of El Gigante Pequeño, a battlefield story of Team 8 facing off against the Helga-led Evil Axis. My impression is that Steve ended up being a little frustrated with the final book. The project went back and forth, growing in size, and he ended up with lots of pages left on the cutting room floor. With it being a battle story it is admittedly light on plot, plus it comes later in continuity than some of the other books that are still being held back, so unless you had been following his Patreon, a lot of the characters would be completely new to you. Still, I was just happy to officially see something new from Steve and enjoyed seeing the new art style he was trying out during this period. Plus, for the first time he was trying his hand at double-page spreads, with the book featuring no less than three of them. Unfortunately for me, my favorite of the three was one he had digitally created from scans of various drawings, but I was happily able to get my second favorite. This scene takes place just after Dino-Guy (one of the new characters and Team 8's "heavy") has taken a grenade to the chest, heroically saving the others. Fearless Dawn is trying to encourage him to hold on and not give up the ghost (which he literally does in the final panel of this original version, while the published page has him making a miraculous recovery). It's a great image of the character and I love the cartoonish inserts of FD on the right side of the page. Social/Sharing |

That definitely demands a place on the wall! The double page size makes the entire piece that much more visually impactful with Mannion's retro style!!

I was this close to making the same joke when I posted that pic, but technically it is indeed. That cartoonish version of her running onto the battlefield was one of the things that sold me on the page.
