Description

"Battle of Midway" by Paul S. Newman. October-December 1963.

Ensign Reed directs the dive bombers to the last carrier (the Hiryu) and watches them bomb the ship.

He realizes that he will refuel at Midway too late in the day to start the search for his downed brother.

He doesn't know that his brother is in the water below him.

His brother watches a Japanese cruiser fire on the unsalvageable Kaga to prevent its capture by the US Navy.

The carrier explodes and sinks.

The brushy inks for flak and the smoke of the burning carrier are great flourishes added. These scenes have a real newsreel look.
