DescriptionLast week, in honour of the release of the new Superman film, I posted a cool page from this annual featuring Superman and Guy Gardner clashing in a battle of wills, rather than brawn. That page was acquired within the past year or so and it was great to acquire it because it fit in perfectly with this page I'm posting today, which happens to be the follow up page to the one I posted last week and shows the immediate aftermath of the aforementioned battle of wills, with Guy acting like the ever insufferable, petulant child we all love to hate. On top of that, the page offers cameo appearances by some of the big guns members of the Justice League as a nice bonus! As I mentioned in last week's post, Denis Rodier inked the early part of the story, and Doug Hazlewood, Brad Vancata and Carlos Garzon also contributed inks after that. But aside from Garzon (who never had a particularly distinctive or recognizable inking style), all of the contributing inkers worked on this issue very early in their careers. The page has the look of early Hazlewood, but I just don't feel 100% certain. Either way, the inks look very complimentary over Grummett's pencils, himself only a few years into his career, and it comes from a very fun Annual, so I'm stoked to have it in my collection. poor Guy having his "precious" ring taken from him AND his fingers broken by Supes! Another cool page from the annual with big JLA cameos! If the previous page was acquired more recently I'll go ahead and assume this one has been with you for much longer.

Wow! What a page! Love when Guy, out of rage, still punches Superman knowing he doesn't have his ring to aid him! Also a Grummett Waverider is fun to see. It was naturally usually Dan written and drawn stories where he appeared, so yeah, definitely cool to see him here drawn by Tom during this memorable story!

Super fun page (Love Waverider).
(though this one does not seem as nicely inked as the previous one to me. Probably due to the fact that it's not as easy to ink full figures than heads and hands?)

This a great page and nice follow up from your last post. I've never read this book but it looks like I need to add this to my list. Thank you for sharing!

Too bad we didn't get this particular interaction in the Superman movie. Really showcases the vastly different characters of these two supers. I love how the other Justice Gang members are looking on at the bottom of that cool vertical panel (I really don't know why they didn't go with "Justice Gang" in the comics ... sooo much cooler) ... haha!

This is a great follow-up page. It isn't that common to be able to obtain two consecutive pages from the same issue nowadays. Many congratulations!

Seeing Superman able to take a Green Lantern ring AND wield it is...kinda frightening! Great page!

Great timing on this post with the appearance of Guy Gardner in the new Superman movie! Handsome page by Tom Grummett with Guy futilely confronting Superman for taking his Ring! I love Grummett's style in this book, reminds me a bit of John Byrne's run on the title. My favorite panel is the next to last one with Superman holding up the ring and saying, "It's not over until I say it's over!" What a fantastic Superman pose in this panel--It's a classic image of the Man of Steel. I love that his gesture is echoed in the next panel by Waverider, emphasizing Superman's triumph! Fantastic pick-up, congrats!

Thanks, Bill. I just want to address your comment regarding Grummett's style reminding you of Byrne. When Tom took over for Pérez as his heir apparent on the New Titans, and honestly even before that on the few fill-in issues he did to break in at DC before being offered the Titans gig, one of the things that stood out to me about his work was that his anatomy was reality based rather than overly exaggerated with extra muscles that don't actually exist in the human body, and the way he drew the muscles immediately reminded me of how Byrne drew them. I've always felt and even told friends that I've always seen Grummett as sort of a cross between Byrne and Pérez, so it's cool to see someone else notice the Byrne similarities.

"Where there's a will there's a way" is a legit burn to a GL, and I'm sure Supes was happy with the delivery knowing recipient was Guy. I'm thinking in panel 2 he may be smiling, but we'll never know :) Nice top to bottom execution from both penciller and inker here, man, congrats on this as well as the back-to-back pages!

Oh well in five years time we could be flipping art so cool
With auctions winding down over me and you
And there'll he punches the bodies in the annuals too
And I'll pen my inks over your lines, but Tom'll peep through
And there'll be punch punch punch on Superman's body
Bid some some some all Tom Grummetts
And they'll bid some some some all over our pages
And won won won - so not Don Heck!
Cos I'll be laughing at all those silly annuals
And we'll be chatting about how in youtube show
All those profit Marvel sold regrets and ink Grummett's line
Cos it's what we needed to have a good Guy
And it was fun fun fun when he wore ring and
It was fun fun fun when he got punched
And it was fun fun fun when we were laughing
It was Ford Ford Ford, oh it was fun
