Description

Picked up a few things in San Diego, including this page from Jasper Jubenvill's latest book-length Dynamite Diva story, The Engine Whispers. Thanks to Scott Eder for offering pages from the book!

This quote from The Comics Journal's online review sums up the book:

"The Engine Whispers� spans over a hundred pages of frenetic yet controlled storytelling that is simultaneously visceral and dynamic."

While this page is less visceral than others in the book, it offers a potent taste of Jubenvill's compelling figure drawing and lush rendering. I particularly like the staggered panels in the first two-thirds of the page. JJ is definitely a creator to watch and at 24 years old, he has decades of work ahead of him.

Great dream like disco music video magic in the top and bottom tiers! The serious story tension is introduced in the middle, but the panels shrink down to allow for the fantasy to take over again. Jubenvill's inking is so precise even with a heavy use of fills and darkness.

this feels very cinematic! the 8 panel sequence with oppositely staggered panel heights is so cool, it creates a tetris-like effect with parallel scenes being told, love that approach. The artwork style and inking are fantastic as well, makes me want to see the rest of the art with how interesting this one is. awesome SDCC pickup, congrats!
