Description

A few months back, Derec was pretty active on WhatNot, and he was asking his chat for requests of characters he could paint. I threw out Saturn Girl as a suggestion, not necessarily expecting anything to come of it, but Derec wound up painting this fantastic piece live on his stream before auctioning it off. I of course had to finish what I'd technically started, so here we are!

This piece measures 6 by 8 inches, so it's a little like four sketch cards stuck together. I think Derec's use of perspective here is just fantastic, and the foreshortening is pretty close to perfect, from what I can tell. The pose is fantastic, too - it's the classic telepath "hand against head" pose, but made very dynamic by the angles he chose and the way she's reaching right out towards the viewer. As always, Derec pays very close attention to his details, too. He very carefully included all the seams of Imra's gloves, and I love that he included her Legion flight ring too (on her right ring finger), even though from this angle you can only see the band.

This is my first piece with a green space background, which I think was an excellent choice to complement the pink of Imra's costume, and I love the bright, bold colours Derec went with for the planets. Unfortunately, my scanner never seems to do his paints justice, so take a look at the additional images to see how bright those colours really are!

Aww, thank you, CAB!!  I appreciate you taking the time to read my description!  I like to give each piece in my gallery a proper history, and point out some things I like about it.

Very cool shaded tones for the greenish and black colors to be reflected on Saturn Girl's costume and face.  It makes her more ready to confront the darkness.

I was surprised that Derec decided to paint her mostly in shadow, but I really like the finished effect!  And I think it makes for a more unique piece, overall.

Nice piece Margaret, you def HAD to finish what you started in that scenario and I agree that the colors are much more vibrant in the photo versus scan. Sounds like WhatNot is a fun place to hang out for art these days, I need to stop sleeping on it I guess.

I think you absolutely should!  I find that WhatNot is a great way to not only commission artists digitally ("long-distance", so to speak), but to actually get to watch them work on your piece without having to go to a convention.  And you get to chat with them as they do it!
