DescriptionDone in 1994Sludge was published by Malibu Comics. After Malibu was sold to Marvel Comics, Sludge ceased publication. Sludge was a character patterned after the other Muck Monsters that preceded him such as the Heap (1942), The Glob (1969), Swamp Thing (1971) and Man-Thing (1971). They all in turn could have been inspired by the short story 'It' by Theodore Sturgeon (1940). Sludge was created by Steve Gerber, Aaron Lopresti and Gary Martin in 1993. This cover was not used and the character on the cover did not appear in the comic. According to Aaron: After the 2nd issue of Sludge, Gerber did not turn in scripts in on time. By issues 6 - 9 I was plotting the issues and then Gerber would use my plots to create scripts. When the 10th issue rolled around, he once again did not turn in a script. So I created a character called "Dusk" and I was going to write and draw that issue. Gerber then showed up with a two part script, so my issue 10 was scrapped and they used Gerber's story. Which ended up being a two part fill-in artist, while I wrote and drew a double-sized issue #12. That, of course, ended up being the final issue. Social/Sharing |

In all my Glob
In Bog my weakness
Can you Heap?
A Swamp's behind
But like you promise
You write for Steve
I feel a spirit move in me Martin
I know it's the same spirit that still Malibu
I don't know how "It" took Aaron to shed this skin
Live under the shadow of your inks
You are all I want
Theodore I need
I'll find piece beneath the shadow of your inks
I'm still afraid
I said too muck
Forgotten Sludge
You'd only see
The Dusk still rising
A broken Sludge
But walking through the 90's was what brought me here
I knew I would never make it just as shown
And I don't know how it took so long, he read this script
Give cover the shadow of your inks

Very cool cover image! Thanks for the history lesson around the title/character, pretty interesting. The Dusk character looks awesome, too bad they weren't used but it lives on here!

Nice early career work by Lopresti and beautifully jazzed up by Martin's inking! Great superhero design which goes well with the overall spotting of blacks in this great looking night scene.
