Description

Purchased from Bill Willingham when he briefly opened up commissions in late October. I'd been waiting over two years for him to open them back up and I pounced on it. Needless to say, worth the wait and delighted with the result.

I requested Chrysalis from his Elementals series and he graciously added a couple additional characters: Saker and Morningstar. I love how you can see Morningstar's face reflected in Chrysalis' armored knee.

Bill posted his process pencils (added below) and final work online, adding:

"Chrysalis bragged about how her living armor was constantly developing new powers, so her master asked for a demonstration. 'Use one of the captives,' the ancient wizard said."

Wow, Willingham's line is even more developed and refined than ever before, which is somewhat surprising because he rarely draws and "when you don't use it, you lose it.", as the old saying goes. Extremely impressive and so great to see new Elementals art from him! I, too, love  see Morningstar being reflected in Chrysalis' knee. Did you notice though, that she's reflecting in costume, even though she's laying naked on the floor?

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor

People see what they want to see, Ruben. She clearly has her skin tight costume on, laying on the floor as evidenced by the seam of her costume going across her backside.

Rich, I know you've collected several pages from the series and maybe even read it again at some point after it was first published, but I didn't recall her costume having any seam going down the middle of her back so I took the liberty of flipping through Elementals comics starting with the Justice Machine Annual just now, looking for a shot of Morningstar from behind. There wasn't any until issue #3, only one panel, so I kept going and then saw a few more in issue #4. I then skipped ahead to issue #20 and some more back shots and I can confirm there is no seam going down the back of her costume. That's simply the shadow going down the spine.

Josh, what's really cool about this piece aside from the great line art I mentioned, is that to me it feels like Bill actually had a scene from a story in mind when he drew your commission and I haven't read the issues since they came out so I don't remember much, but do recall some costumes getting burned off at some point and partial nudity being show. Maybe this scene is based on one of the stories? It's just so cool that you asked for a single character piece and he gave you what is essentially a story within a single illustration!

Wow! Amazing! One of my favorite villains from the series, after Ratman, of course! :) I wish I had known about his commission list opening. Congrats my friend!

Ruben, the seam I'm referring to is on her backside (a polite way of saying her butt), not down her spine. Her costume seam does wrap around her behind.
