DescriptionHere is a nice piece of history and part of the mythology of Milton Caniff. Early on in his career, Caniff was a budding young actor with promise and he was torn between art and acting. At the time, Caniff was working at an Ohio paper along with the legendary Billy Ireland and this is the advice that Ireland gave which Milt took to heart. The rest is history. This historic moment was recreated in this illustration from 1978, probably a good 45 years after those immortal words were first conjured. The date on the art does coincide with the founding of the Billy Ireland Museum in Ohio which Caniff gifted all his art to and helped establish. This is a perfect fit with my every growing Caniff collection and am happy to give it a home. A big thank you to Michael O for letting this one pass on to me.Social/Sharing |

I'm going to guess it's because he gave his artwork to the Billy Ireland Museum just a year earlier and 1978 was when it was opened for viewing.

A piece of history! This has more of an EC/Mad Magazine feel to it than Terry and the Pirates, at least to my eye

It's nice to see this piece again. I owned it a million years ago. I believe it was done for one of the NCS publications, maybe for a Reuben Awards program. A great association piece.

Amazing! We are going full meta here and it is wonderful. Even included the drawing table in the drawing. Wow, just fantastic.

Great piece and story behind it. I think pieces that have some sort of autobiographical context to them such as this are among the coolest types of pieces you can get in this hobby, especially for uber fans of any given artist. Well done!

Wonderful piece! I love the Caniff/Ireland connection as I live locally to the Billy Ireland museum and have been several times. I would imagine they would love a nice hi res scan if they don't already have one. Congrats and thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of history!

There is a good chance the original will go to the Billy Ireland Musuem when the time comes. It is a important institute in my eyes and I have and will continue to donate things to them over time.
