DescriptionDuring the last century, I was in the right place at the right time and was lucky enough to purchase an early large-art Kirby/Sinnott Fantastic Four cover. This was when they were available for a price that didn't require a second mortgage. There were some condition issues, including stats that had come loose, so I never posted it to CAF, and only sent a digital picture of the unrestored art to a couple fellow collectors over the years.I have a buddy named Pepé who used to bug me about letting him restore the cover. I told Pepé that someday I'd send the cover for professional restoration, as (previously) undocumented early large-art FF covers are valuable and scarce. Pepé was undeterred. Ever since getting his GED, Pepé loves trying to create a well-structured argument... it almost doesn't matter what the topic is. I think everybody has a childhood friend like this... somebody who you'll always be buddies with because of your history together, but who you might not choose for a friend if you met in adulthood. Using his easy mastery of tautological rhetoric, Pepé undertook the rigorous development of his propositional calculus thusly: "Dude... you know that whenever you save up the money to have your artwork restored, you're just going to spend the money on other artwork. It's the same reason that you don't frame your comic art.... you just want more artwork that you can't afford. Plus, I know for a fact that you're afraid to mail your comic cover for restoration for fear that it'll be lost or stolen en route. I'll do a good job fixing your funky cover artwork, and when I'm done I'll mount it to foam-core to make it easier to hang on the wall." When I sputtered "YOU MAY NOT MOUNT MY FF COVER TO FOAM-CORE BOARD!!!" Pepé told me that his coworker at the rendering plant does that with his collectible QVC posters and it looks really cool... but it's my artwork, so I can do what I want with it. After a few years, Pepé gave up his appeals to logic and moved on to arguing about Iraq policy, whether Feist is cool or not, and theology. This March Pepé was helping me out by watering my plants while I was traveling for my birthday with my wife and kids. When I got back from our mini-vacation, Pepé said "Happy Birthday, dude! I fixed your comic cover! And I didn't mount it to foam-core, just like you asked! I knew that you were going to remain paralyzed and never restore it, so I took the initiative!" I guess I have to admit, for a guy who isn't a certified member of the American Institute For Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, and to be honest comes across as kind of clumsy, Pepé did a much better job than I expected. I wasn't home to explain that the old stats had to be reaffixed to the art instead of replaced with new ones, but at least the cover isn't mounted to foam-core board, which I was happy about. If you're interested in having Pepé do some work on your own art collection, drop me an email and I'll forward along his contact information. Social/Sharing |

Update: Don't let Pepé anywhere near your comic art collection. I'm looking for Pepé. Anybody know Pepé? Anybody? Don't worry. Don't worry, comic art collectors. I'm gonna get Pepé. His ass is grass and I'm the lawnmower. I'm the Toro, I'm the Honda, I'm the John Deere, I'm the Snapper, I'm... I'm gonna get Pepé.

great cover and a heck of a story... but I dunno that foam core really would've made the art pop I think;)

Iconic cover by the King!! And one absolutely nutty back story... New stats or old, this is some cool art to have in one's collection

Good lord that's a fine piece. Hopefully, my recollection serves and this was an April Fool's day joke with the whole Pepe story and that you will find a better restorer someday. Maybe today was that day. Great meeting you and congrats on this incredible acquisition!

Okay, this is an insanely good cover. I read your featured member write up, and this description, and couldn't stop laughing. Thanks for the great humor. Its something this hobby needs more of these days, as collectors pay insane amounts of money for art that they take way too seriously. These are comics after all, it's supposed to be fun!!

It's been 16 years. I can finally admit: I am Pépé. Also, when I was a kid I lived on Curtiss Way. I still need to put some final touches on this cover - lmk.
