Description

And once again we have Gold Key's Comics' paranormal investigator and his gal Friday, Lakota Rainwater, confronting the forces of darkness. Powerfully penciled by the great Luke McDonnell, and inked by the man who puts the "king" in "inking": Bob Almond.

As I mentioned in the commentary to the penciled version, Dr. Spektor was investigating the unknown and the supernatural years before the X-Files, Hellboy, and Scooby Doo came along. Well, maybe not before Scooby Doo. Scooby's been around a long time. But Dr. Spektor did out of his passion for the job, not because somebody bribed him with some Scooby-snacks. Plus, he did it without any help from Phyllis Diller or the Harlem Globetrotters.

Doc's secretary Lakota always seemed to be around to play the damsel-in-distress role. Interestingly enough, even though they seemed to have kind of an unspoken sexual tension between them, they never got romantically involved, at least not on panel. Way to go, Doc. Don't fool around with the hired help, as it could cost you millions in the end. Maybe you could give some lessons to Bill O'Reilly.

The penciled version of this piece -- also shown in this gallery -- looks great. But man, did Bob take it to the next level with his inks. Together its a winning combination. Luke of course had a very long tenure drawing DC's SUICIDE SQUAD and Marvel's IRON MAN, among other titles. Bob Almond has inked many a title in his day as well, most notably Marvel's BLACK PANTHER. Both men are masters of their craft, and you can't go wrong commissioning either one of them.

This looks like an unofficial tribute to Gene Colan! Great piece. By the way, you've inspired me to kick it up a notch in the description area.

I think that look of terror on Lakota's face is a response to your mention of Bill O'Reilly. :) Awesome work, incidentally, by both Luke and Bob.
