DescriptionSeems like it was only yesterday...This title splash was produced during Cockrum's second run on Uncanny X-Men (the first being his famous launch & co-creation of the new X-Men characters Nightcrawler {who he considered an alter-ego of sorts}, Storm & Colossus in the summer of 1975 and continuing in issues #94-105, 107). He was replaced by artist John Byrne in issue #108 after Marvel decided that the book was popular enough to move to a bi-monthly schedule...and after the speedier Byrne let is be widely known he wanted to draw the book. After introducing the Shi'ar Imperial Army and the Starjammers, Cockrum left the book - exhausted by the pace and behind deadline - in the middle of 1977 and Byrne got his wish. Byrne eventually left the book in 1981 and Cockrum returned to the title with issue #145. He would stay with the book (with the exception of issues #151-152 & 159-160) until issue #164 in 1983, at which time he would begin work on the Futurians. Social/Sharing |

Powerful first page scene. This is what a splash should be, and it draws you in the read the rest of the story.

I only discovered Cockrum's art MUCH later than most, but I think it holds very well, even without the nostalgic attachment. Congrats on adding this beauty to your collection !

This is indeed impressive, Chris. It was great to link up with you at the SDCC, and I look forward to your future updates with a certain page that you purchased from DM.

Cockrum's second run on the title produced some great art, as he hadn't lost a step. This title page is a perfect example of how good Cockrum really was. Beautiful work from my favorite period of this book.

Awesome Cockrum splash page, so many great characters on the page that he had his hands on for creating and developing.
