Description

This art was given the designation "US Atlantic Fleet, Composite Sqadron 8". At the time it was received by the unit we had four small escort aircraft carriers (CVE'S) in the Atlantic. Each had an average of twelve torpedo bombers supported by sixteen fighters. The squadron, was commissioned on 9 December, 1943, and decommissioned on 9 October 1945. VC-8 was an antisubmarine squadron equipped with FM Wildcats and TBM torpedo bombers. It was aboard the escort carrier USS NEHENTA (CVE-74) in the Pacific, and aboard the USS GUADACANAL (CVE-60) in the Atlantic. It was aboard the USS GUADACANAL during the capture of the German submarine U-505, which currently resides in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The Gruman Avenger eventually became the torpedo bomber of choice. While providing cover for convoys by torpeding surface ships the Avenger contributed to warding off German U-BOATS. It was the most effective submarine killer in the Atlantic and Pacific with about thirty kills. - The Disney insigne recalled the Phantom Blot, a creation from the mind of Floyd Gottfredson which appeared on the cover of the first Mickey Mouse comic book Four Color 16 entitled "Mickey Mouse Outwits The Phantom Blot".
