DescriptionHot Wheels toys started showing up in the department stores near my house around 1968. Being cool, fast and cheap, my relatives started buying them for me as birthday and Christmas gifts soon after. So, in 1969, when CBS aired a "Hot Wheels" Saturday Morning cartoon, it proved irresistible to me, as did the comic book adaptation of the cartoon published by DC Comics. The cartoon was accused of being crass commercialism, and, I suppose, it was, but the comic was far more sophisticated, and it introduced me to the work of the great Alex Toth.My true appreciation for Toth came as I grew older, but even then, my five-year-old self greatly appreciated the easy-to-follow storytelling technique of Mr. Toth. And hey, those cars he drew were way cool. So while I admire his mystery and war comics work and will readily admit its artistic greatness, in my heart of hearts, I have always wanted a page from Hot Wheels. It took me a while to find one, but thanks again to Anthony Snyder, I was finally able to acquire a page with great cars and great action. Aside from that, however, another reason I like this page so much is the lettering. Few artists incorporate lettering and onomatopoeia onto a page better than Toth. Here, he has the cars "vrroom" and "screee" and "kabash" all about the page, so, while it may not have some of the design elements people look for in his work, I think, stylistically, it is as good as it gets. A third reason I like the page, and this might prove controversial with many Toth aficionados, is that it is inked by the great Dick Giordano (who was also the book's editor). I, too, admire Toth's own inks, but he often used markers, and they invariably faded. Giordano, who understood Toth, and, to my mind, actually enhanced his art, uses all brush on this page. For the record, the scan of the page comes from Mr. Snyder and the pics of the cover and the printed page were borrowed from one of my favorite websites, Diversions of the Groovy Kind. I would have chosen stronger language than "uh oh", were I the driver of that car in the second to last panel. Your descriptions aptly sums up all that is great about this page. Amazing to think that a product tie-in comic would boast such an impressive creative team.

Beautiful write up, and a great justification for choosing your page with Giordano's luscious links.

It's great that Toth's original blue pencils are still there. I always thought the blue adds to the look, especially in the case of this art which is basically a line drawing (vs a composition with lots of black masses).

I have always liked the race pages from the first issue of Hot Wheels a lot and think that they are amongst the best pages Toth drew for this title. I love the speed lines and the blue pencil lines a lot!
