DescriptionGil Kane (originally born Eli Katz in April 1926) co-created the modern-day versions of the superheroes Green Lantern and the Atom for DC Comics. This title splash from Green Lantern, volume 2, issue 23 (September 1963) features the debut of the villain Tattooed Man (a.k.a. Abel Tarrant), a sailor based in Coast City who turned to burglary. During one of his heists, he was exposed to mysterious chemicals that left him with the ability to mentally create actual objects from the chemicals. When he got back from the robbery, he tattooed himself with weapons using the chemicals so he would always have the ability to access them for his criminal benefit. Among the shapes he was able to conjure from his tattoos were axes, shields, cannons, dragons and, in this case, flaming pinwheels! Who thinks of flaming pinwheels as a weapon? The Tattooed Man…which maybe explains why he went from ‘the deadliest villain Green Lantern faced’ to not exactly seen a lot in comics.Writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell (using the name Mart Dellon) originated the Green Lantern, who first appeared in the Golden Age of comic books in July 1940 in All-American Comics #16, published by All-American Publications, one of three companies that would eventually merge to form DC Comics. The Golden Age Green Lantern's real name was Alan Scott, a railroad engineer who, after a railway crash, comes into possession of a magic lantern that speaks to him and says it will bring him power. From this, he crafted a magic ring that gave him a wide variety of powers. The limitations of the ring were that it had to be "charged" every 24 hours by touching it to the lantern for a time and that it did not work on wooden objects. The creators had originally planned to give the Green Lantern the alter ego "Alan Ladd," a linguistic twist on Aladdin, but DC considered the wordplay distracting and the character's name was changed before publication to "Alan Scott." A popular character in the 1940s, the Green Lantern was featured both in All-American Comics and in his own title, as well as co-starring in Comic Cavalcade along with Flash and Wonder Woman. He was a charter member of the Justice Society of America, whose adventures ran in All Star Comics. After World War II the popularity of superheroes in general declined and the Green Lantern comic book was cancelled with issue #38 (June 1949). All Star Comics #57 (March 1951) was the character's last Golden Age appearance. Following DC’s successful revival of the Flash in Showcase #4 (Oct. 1956), a new Green Lantern was introduced in Showcase #22 (October 1959) by editor/conceptualist Julius Schwartz, writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane. This Green Lantern was Hal Jordan, a test pilot who was given a power ring by a dying alien and becomes a member of the Green Lantern Corps, an interstellar organization of police overseen by the Guardians of the Universe. Jordan's creation was motivated by a desire to make him more of a science fiction hero, editor Julius Schwartz having been a longtime fan of that genre and believing pop-culture tastes were turning in that direction. Hal Jordan would also be a founding member of the Justice League of America. After penciling stories featuring Green Lantern in Showcase #23 (December 1959) and #24 (February 1960), Kane would pencil most of the first 75 issues of the character’s own series, now titled Green Lantern, vol. 2, beginning with issue #1 in August 1960, continuing with issues #2-61, 68-74 and concluding with issue #75 in January 1970. In 1997, Kane was inducted into both the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame and the Harvey Award’s Jack Kirby Hall of Fame. Social/Sharing |

What a great splash. Hobby beware: There's a three-headed OA monster in Chicago!

Congrats, this is a huge acquisition for any collection IMO. Kane's early Green Lanterns are easily some of the best that DC had to offer in the silver age. It must feel amazing to own a splash from the series.
