Winsor McCay
Winsonr McCay, together with R.F. Outcault and James Swinnerton, must be considered the “father” of the comics. Though the others were more engaged in the “comical” accent, McCay put in the field an incredible thrust of imaginative fantasies that often became an early kind of Surrealism. Indeed, with “Little Sammy Sneeze” and “Hungry Henrietta” the comic accent is just a “shape” since the core of both strips is to “evaluate” where is the limit of the “excess”. With “Dream of the Rarebit Fiend” we enter instead the world of “dreams and nightmare”: a sequence of visions of our mind that is contemporary with the early researches of the psychoanalists, but still in a comic way. Then, based upon this experience, he achieved the idea of “Little Nemo”, that’s to say the kingdom of “night fantasies”. “Little Sammy Sneeze”, only in sunday edition, runned from 1904 to 1906, “Dream of the Rarebit Fiend” (where McCay undersigned as “Silas”) from 1904 to 1919.
