Alan Jim Hanley
Alan Hanley, also known as Jim Hanley (to friends & family), was an incredibly prolific artist, contributing to hundred's of comic fanzines. When I say prolific, this is not an understatement, as Hanley was published in most of the key fanzines of the 60's/70's, including Enterprise, The Buyer's Guide for Comic Fandom, The Collector, RBCC, Chronicle, All Dynamic, Comic Courier, Nucleus, Comic Crusader, Farce of Fandom, Comicology, Fantastic Fanzine, Gosh Wow, FVP, Bumbazine, Marvelmania, Concussion, On the Drawing Board, The Comic Reader, Sense of Wonder, Voice of Comicdom, Capa-Alpha, Good Garbage Comics, Comic & Crypt, Fandom Unlimited and many others ... whew ... way too many to count!
Hanley was a free-lance caricaturist by day, and as a result, could churn out an illustration in record time. He had a whimsical, cartoony style that was completely professional, yet fun. His artwork and story content emulated the simpler super-hero days of the 40s Golden Age, especially CC Beck and the story elements of Captain Marvel ... Hanley's main super hero creation, Goodguy, was based on the Big Red Cheese.
Hanley was also an early pioneer of the small press, creating some of the first independently produced comic books. In 1966, he self-published Comic Book #1, and 6 more issues were produced of this fanzine through 1976. Some of the characters he created were Goodguy, The Mitey Buggers, The Spook, Captain Thunder, Greenhorn and All-American Jack.
Hanley died tragically in a car accident on Christmas Eve 1980 at the age of 41.
