I mean, come on - what kind of pool is it when the sharks take over? A dead pool, of course. Chris's masterful use of the panel space he is given here really makes this page sing, as everything fits, but feels -very- clausrophobic at the same time. The Unworthy Thor Issue #5, Pgs 3-4 DPS - Olivier Coipel Owner: Eranga Devasurendra Comment posted on 9/24/2024 Odin's beard!!! WOW, Eranga - this is next level's next level! An absolute pinnacle Coipel piece that (you nailed it) positively sings, thanks to Olivier's inking and washes. Love the original Avengers lineup (with Wasp popping out, way in front), and I love how Olivier illustrates the different belt buckles Thor has borne over the years. :) And as much as this is (unquestionably) a museum-Worthy piece, let's not lose sight of the fact that there's some good storytelling here, too, as that last subtle panel (hidden in some lovely shadows in that bottom right corner) portends of something rumbling in the distance (and coming closer)... Fantastic job locking this one down, E! This magic lightning can't possibly strike twice! |

Batman: First Knight issue 2 page 28 Mike Perkins Owner: Pellucidar Mikishawn Comment posted on 9/19/2024 Wow - a fantastic showcase of -so- many of the things Mike was doing so well on this series! Some great establishing shots to set the scene (as well as some beautiful portraiture to set the reader's POV with the girl) and then the pure, almost operatic drama of a monster rising from the depths. In a world that didn't yet know about Batman, this would be a pretty terrifying moment, and Mike illustrates it perfectly, relying on those fantastic atmospheric swirls of his (along with razor cuts and white paint) to really punch the story beat. The folds of his cape in panel 6, the way that Batman's plea for mercy is framed in panel 7, his retreat in panel 8 (executed in wash, giving a great sense of depth and layers to the panel) are awesome moments of graphic storytelling. Congrats on grabbing such a cool example from this beautiful series! |

The Bat-man: First Knight - i. 02, p. 43 Owner: Brian Hole Comment posted on 9/19/2024 "Dark and stormy night" does -NOT- cover this one, brother! :) Less rainstorm and more "unholy downpour of torrential elemental fury" (or even "celestial, pus-filled boil that had been lanced, and its despair and pain washed down over the denizens of Gotham..."), however you want to phrase it (less pus, please), one thing going in our favor is that we have Mike Perkins to take us through it. Such stunning work! The time period this was set in was special in many ways: not only did it give us a chance to see Mike draw a pre-WWII Gotham, but it was a simple and elegant way to "de-power" Batman and raise the stakes on what would normally be a relatively "simple" task for him: facing down a baddie in a parking lot. In this story, you really felt like two or three guys could take out our Dark Knight Detective. Super fun! So that, along with Mike's incredible ability to depict a storm on a page, really amps up the drama here. LOVE the razor cuts to depict the rain. LOVE the drops of white paint in panels 7 and 8 to show the water impacting off of Batman's hands. And those hands! The last four panels are my favorites here, I think, with Mike's beautiful brushwork doing some seriously heavy lifting. Mike's camera placement (and zoom!) is perfect as well, moving the action along clearly, and never letting us lose sight of the fact that this is a painful fight that isn't going well for our hero. The lighting in panel 5 is simply -superb-. This whole thing is beautiful chiaroscuric storytelling, and is a gorgeous testament to the next-level work Mike was doing on this series - congrats on grabbing such a sweet example of it! |

The Bat-Man: First Knight #1 p.40 - Mazzucchelli-esque! Owner: Ruben DaCollector Comment posted on 9/19/2024 Rubén!! In "comic book terms", I don't know that I've ever seen a cooler depiction of Batman (sorry, The Bat-Man) as a thing of mist and shadow, ever elusive and invisible. But from an artistic design and execution standpoint, this is quite possibly my very favorite page from the three-issue artistic high-water mark that was "First Knight". Harnessing all the momentum he had built up during Swamp Thing (sorry, The Swamp Thing), he was able to channel that into a very significant level-up, treating us all to period-specific, photorealistic architecture, gorgeous (and hideous!) people, and workhorses of cars. His incredible use of shadow and moody, noirish lighting has always been a huge part of his best work, but it feels like it was all just practice leading up to this point. The prison stands like a fortress here, imposing and impenetrable, degassing pain, regret, and sorrow into the night sky. And Mike has sculpted that night sky in such a way that it not only sets the emotional timbre of the upcoming scene, but you also never lose sight of The Bat-Man as he executes his infiltration. (The sky even appears to give an exultant cheer in the last panel, to celebrate Bruce's accomplishment and cap off the hero moment. Gorgeous work!) Mike's ability to unerringly produce these photorealistic settings, to so consistently and accurately capture the reference he takes, is nothing short of jaw-dropping. And, yeah, a total nod to Mazzuchelli here, just as previous pages featured unmistakably Neal Adams moments, and unmistakably Bernie Wrightson moments, etc., etc. Mike's enthusiasm for (and investment into) this project is beyond question! Seeing this page in person must -truly- be a sensational experience. This tale leaned into the time period to add a gritty, more street-level feel to the mystery, and this series was a gorgeous page-after-page reminder that Mike is at the very peak of his powers, on a very elite list of folks able to produce work of this caliber, consistency, and scale. My -most- sincere congratulations on landing this incredible page, Rubén! What an incredible beauty! |

Along with the Harren influence, that wide open third panel also reminds me of Jeff Smith's forest scenes in Bone; nothing like a good glade or clearing to set up some action in (and the beast's posture in this panel also screams Bone to me, too). Fantastic atmosphere and storytelling here throughout. Yup, DWJ definitely had "it" in spades, even from the start. We all know that "evil samurai lord" (or something along those lines) was one of the essential design brainstorms George Lucas handed to Ralph McQuarrie when the latter was conceiving the visual look for the character, and it is -super- cool to see this perfect fit of a "throwback" take by a new (and -very- exciting) artist. Fantastic color choices, and the Death Star hanging above Vader (as if the Dark Father himself wasn't imposing enough) is icing on the cake. Love the waves crashing, powerless, at Vader's feet. Even the elements themselves have no chance here. |

"Daddy, Daddy", "Grandpa, Grandpa", "My husband, my husband", "You're welcome!" (1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3). Brilliant. |

Dave's writing was so good, and wove so effortlessly into the art, lettering, and backgrounds, that the immersion into the purity of Cerebus's character (or lack thereof :) ) made for an unforgettable reading experience. X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills pg. 19 (1982) - Colossus, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Danger Room Owner: James S Comment posted on 9/17/2024 Holy moley, James! I had no idea how you'd be able to level up your collection - with the caliber it was already at, was such a thing even possible? - but then you go and add a page like this, and everything becomes clear. :) Flippin' FABULOUS add, James! Gorgeous action storytelling here, with each tier of the page given its own visual identity: an open, bold top tier, allowing Colossus to strut his stuff (love the white paint flames he's blocking), while the cage's bars in tier 2 provide some sweet visual texture. My favorite, though, is how Brent moves the viewer's eye from tier 3 to 4 with the thrown machinery; you just naturally follow the arc of that puppy right down to the next level, and the impact is tangible. (Would have loved a "THOOM!!" there instead of a "CLANG", though, as we had already gotten a "CLANG!" (with an exclamation point, even!) for the cage drop on the tier above, but I guess you can't have everything... 😜 ). And you get a "BAMF"!! God loved, but this PAGE kills. Fantastic score, James! Mega-congrats! |

Black Panther #7 COVER by Alex Ross (ft Storm, Shuri) Owner: K Gearon Comment posted on 9/17/2024 Superb. Adding an Alex Ross (-any- Alex Ross!) to one's collection is a huge milestone, but when the piece is such an exact fit to the collector and collection, it is an occasion for -massive- celebration. Ross is, of course, a master of lighting, color, and composition, and he brings his A-game here. A gorgeous backdrop of perfectly chosen color pops out the stunning assemblage; all power and regality. The tilted camera angle allows for a really compelling POV (and for the cast to take up the most space available on the page). The streams of yellow light across the image evokes a great "sunrise" effect, like a misty morning dawn in Wakanda, where the royal family is going to bring all their focus to bear on a problem... and you'd better not be looking for trouble. A noble and powerful depiction of our heroes, and Alex's legendary photo-realism elevates this into the heavens. Such a powerful image!! CONGRATULATIONS, Kahlil, on locking down this treasure. You pulled out all the stops to make this happen, and you should bask in this indelible moment of triumph. :) FANTASTIC piece - MEGA-congrats, K! |

Everything is in service to the story, and is intended to visually convey all the info a reader would need in every image. That intention may sometimes be at odds with creating the "prettiest picture" (and to his eternal credit, as with Kirby, he'll always err on the side of the storytelling), but not here. WORLD WAR HULK 1 PAGE 22 BY JOHN ROMITA JR & KLAUS JANSON Owner: F M Comment posted on 9/12/2024 Really, really solid page, F M, that acts as an iron clad reminder of what a fabulous cartoonist JR, Jr is. Nothing is over-rendered for over-rendering's sake; there is the perfect amount of detail to convey the story while still showcasing the art chops. The simplicity of the expressions (both of the frightened citizens in the top panel, and Shulkie's awesome smirk to Spidey in panel 2) do a lot of the heavy lifting for the writer. And same with those last two (superb) city shots: cluttered images because it is a mega-populated metropolis, not because of artistic "twiddling"; there's just enough detail Great use of blacks by Janson in those last panels, too, allowing for some cool bridge cable texture and mass to the bridge, freighters, and people movers. Just as you say - fantastic work by a top-tier art team. Congrats, Fred!! |

I also love the "crackle" around the panel borders here (just as you mention) adding a fantastic texture to the piece - imagine the panels without it... Having our heroes break through the bottom page border (and over the panel walls of panel 3) really makes this a very compelling image. Sumptuous black inks! Really pretty page, F M! GREAT pick up! |

I have posted before that I think Alex's -true- passion is to draw brain-meltingly beautiful landscapes or architecture... and then maybe find some way to fit a superhero in there to "pay the bills" (as it were), but the usage of the Surfer (and the history and karmic/psychic imprint the character brings) allows another natural (yet human-based) element to add to these glorious studies. It's brilliant, and all fits together seamlessly. (I showed your piece to my wife and she says this is her new favorite. :) ). Letting your eye slowly drift from the bottom of this piece to the top - working up from the black, lazily through the clouds, and then shifting into blue, then purple - generates a tangible emotional response in me. Never mind "shine"; this thing -resonates-. Sensational piece, Josh; simply superb. |

Fantastic Four #556 pgs 18-19 by Hitch/Currie Owner: Chris Snorek Comment posted on 9/1/2024 BOOM! Like the great Gentleman George Perez before him, it seems like Mr. Hitch will never shy away from any situation that allows him to beef up a character count (or sheer tonnage of rubble) on a page! And then on top of that, he throws in -SNOW- here? Gadzooks - this is off-the-hook crazy! A beautfully choreographed moment that starts off quiet (too quiet!) and explodes into action starting with the three in-your-face (literally, CapBot!) middle panels and ending (three panels later) with a full-scale superhero conflagration. This is the visual manifestation of accelleration, Chris, and it is thrilling to behold. And on a single board, too? Love it. I loved this run, and love to see more pieces from it posted. Love, love, love!! Sincere congrats, sir! |

Everything is so precise and crisp in a usual Lafuente piece, but add color and it takes the whole thing to 11! The mutiple layers of red on Daredevil are exquisite, and the white of his laces simply explodes out of the red of his boots. And then there's Natasha... The folds of her clothing, the lighting on her face and hair, the muzzle flash... Holy moley. An absolutely spectacular piece! Congratulations, man! |

You put two storytellers like Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo together and magic was made. Quite literally in this storyline, where Doom embraces the sorcerous part of his heritage to further frustrate the FF... A titanic pick up, Kin, from a landmark issue and launch of an unforgettable storyline. Brilliant work! Congrats on locking this beauty down! |

Fantastic Four (vol. 2) #2, page 20 Owner: Kin Wong Comment posted on 8/30/2024 KA-zounds!! SPECTACULAR page here, Kin. You can't ask for a bigger, better, bolder reveal of Marvel's First Family in costume than this. What luck that there was that roll of electrician's tape floating around so that the gang could create their "4" logos... :) Fantastic Four by 3M! :) This first Heroes Reborn launch preceded the Ultimate universe by only a couple years, but their mission and approach was the same: to revamp and recharge these outstanding properties via beautiful art and awesome storytelling to get back to the basics. Jim Lee's FF was head and shoulders above the rest, and I still think about it (and love it) to this day. Just all kinds of awesomeness to take in here. Congrats on this epic pick up, Kin! |

Uncanny X-MenX-Men (2013) #600 p. 32 & 33 Owner: Alex Thornton Comment posted on 8/30/2024 Honestly, I have absolutely -no- idea how all this time could have passed without me commenting on this. Perhaps I love it -too- much....? lol :) An absolute slobberknocker of a Bachalo DPS that melts one's brain while forcing one to ask oneself, "what more could you ever want from a Bachalo X-Men spread?!?" A dizzying array of mutants (hi, Doop!) assemble to get the lowdown on Cyclops' New Mutant Revolution in a landmark 600th issue, and Chris infuses each with that Bachalo charm and personality. It is brilliant fun to sift through this piece and pick out all the different characters. I hope you stare at this one a lot, Alex (and, hilariously, no Wolverine :) )! Congrats on the great pick up, Alex! |

Doctor (Dr.) Doom by Matt Lesniewski Owner: K Gearon Comment posted on 8/30/2024 "He's more machine than man; twisted and evil...". Gorgeous hatching by Matt on this one, and just like Rubén said, the textures are off the chart here. I love the left shoulder plate and elbow joint, and especially the left hand, with the fingers piecemealed together from five different sources (are they like the Mandarin's rings, where each one does a different thing? One for a photon beam, one for a disintegration ray, one that's also a screwdriver, one to open letters, etc...), and the gun butt and holster throw in a whole different island of textures right in the middle of the piece. I love the threads on the screw-in left wrist (that might not have happened if you had been a little more careful holding large marble-sized pockets of raw, unknown energy, Doc...), as well as the Latverian backgrounds (as you so aptly shouted out)! So much to love here; an awesome take on an all-time great character in a positively thrilling style! What a visual treat! SUPERB pick up, K! |
