Desaad pinup by Tom Mandrake Owner: Matt McCaul Comment posted on 4/5/2024
Matt McCaul said:
Thank you for your input! I can't see any pencil markings and underneath certain areas, it looks as it if there are printed bluelines underneath. You might certainly be right. I hope so! I reached out to Tom himself and asked if it was or not. Hopefully he gets back to me. ![]() Hopefully he'll reply, but most likely Tom was just very thorough when erasing the pencils. I just don't think blueline inking started until years later -- the only separate pencils/inks at that time would have been relatively rare cases where inks were done via a lightbox. |

Desaad pinup by Tom Mandrake Owner: Matt McCaul Comment posted on 3/31/2024 That's great! Not sure why you think it might be bluelines, but I believe it's original pencils/inks on the same board. Bluelines weren't really a thing in 1996 when this was published. You might be confusing this with the Jack Kirby's Heroes and Villians (Black Magic Edition) book where inkers used a lightbox to ink Kirby's pencil drawings on separate art board. The Fourth World Gallery, which this was part of, was new art inspired by Kirby's work, but not directly based on Kirby drawings. |

Al Williamson - Flash Gordon #1 cover Owner: Ray Cuthbert Comment posted on 3/21/2024 Wow -- this is so iconic! I was too young to have seen Al's Flash Gordon work in the 60's, but I was blown away when his Marvel series came out in the 90's and then I collected the back issues. Truly stunning! |

Legion of Superheroes appearing in Action Comics Issue 381 Page 21 Owner: Aidan (Re-Legion ) Lacy Comment posted on 3/9/2024 Groovy page! It's funny how they basically turned the Legion into a romance comic at this time. I had to go back and re-read the story as I didn't remember these two ever being an item -- probably because it was only for this issue (and pretty much just this page). |

The Marvel age of movie adaptations! They knew this was going to be a lavish production with Spielberg attached. Nice and gritty Hell's Kitchen finish to the art. It reflects the cinematography of the grainy 70's. If the kids want mini-golf, then he might as well move the family to Ohio and open a mini-golf and leave all this alien stuff behind. ![]() LOL -- hopefully Bill will see this comment eventually. |

Die hard Speedball fan and when a friend pointed this out I had an intense moment of glee! Absolutely incredible page and I'm so very glad that you posted it. You don't see very many of these out in the wild. Totally worth the 22 years it took for you to post it🙂 ![]() Thanks. I used to own the cover to #6 too, but I traded that years ago. I don't recall seeing any other covers, but they must be out there somewhere. |

Speedball #9 cover Owner: Ted Latner Comment posted on 3/1/2024
Michael Greczek said:
By the late 80s, Ditko's style had grown stale. People had moved on. Plus many had not forgotten how he abandoned them on Spider Man over 20 years earlier. Maybe he would have had greater success with some EC type sci-fi / fantasy book rather than another super hero reach. Or perhaps an "Untold Tales Of Dr Strange" book where Ditko was also the writer would have captured big sales. That being said, I bought multiple copies of each issue in the hope that Speedball would hit it big. It didn't. But I really enjoyed the character, the storyline, and, of course, Steve Ditko !! ![]() Unfortunately Ditko was never willing to draw Spidey or Dr. Strange again due to his unhappiness about lack of credit and compensation. Speedball just wasn't the right project at the right time, but Ditko did do some nice work during this period on smaller projects such as Static and the Mocker. |

all good; you're welcome; i'd like to add that's it's a sought-after statue and commands a hefty price tag; also someone recently posted your strip in a facebook jones group fyi further, that statue was advertised in an early russ cochran's art catalog; i think it's called "cave man", and the other statue was a woman; damn, you're so lucky to own that strip; like the maltese falcon statue haha ![]() Thanks again for the info. My other Corrigan strip from November 8, 1977 also has that statue in it and I never really noticed it before. I only have a low-res scan right now so I'll have to dig up that strip and re-scan and post it here. |
