I admit I've never heard of the artist, but a very cool piece!  I love how he did the shading and a drooly Hulk is a scary Hulk!

Hopefully he'll reply, but most likely Tom was just very thorough when erasing the pencils. I just don't think blueline inking started until years later -- the only separate pencils/inks at that time would have been relatively rare cases where inks were done via a lightbox.

That's great! Not sure why you think it might be bluelines, but I believe it's original pencils/inks on the same board. Bluelines weren't really a thing in 1996 when this was published. You might be confusing this with the Jack Kirby's Heroes and Villians (Black Magic Edition) book where inkers used a lightbox to ink Kirby's pencil drawings on separate art board.  The Fourth World Gallery, which this was part of, was new art inspired by Kirby's work, but not directly based on Kirby drawings.

Wow -- this is so iconic!  I was too young to have seen Al's Flash Gordon work in the 60's, but I was blown away when his Marvel series came out in the 90's and then I collected the back issues. Truly stunning!

Big Congrats!  Before the death of Phoenix, this was the key X-Men shocker moment. I also really love the dynamic Cockrum/Grainer art, especially the great middle panel of the team in action!

Groovy page!  It's funny how they basically turned the Legion into a romance comic at this time.  I had to go back and re-read the story as I didn't remember these two ever being an item -- probably because it was only for this issue (and pretty much just this page).

Thanks. I used to own the cover to #6 too, but I traded that years ago. I don't recall seeing any other covers, but they must be out there somewhere.

Unfortunately Ditko was never willing to draw Spidey or Dr. Strange again due to his unhappiness about lack of credit and compensation. Speedball just wasn't the right project at the right time, but Ditko did do some nice work during this period on smaller projects such as Static and the Mocker.

I'm not sure who's crazier -- you for suggesting that someone recreate this or Gary for actually going through with it!  Very impressive accomplishment!  I can't imagine how long this must have taken him to complete.

Thanks again for the info.  My other Corrigan strip from November 8, 1977 also has that statue in it and I never really noticed it before.  I only have a low-res scan right now so I'll have to dig up that strip and re-scan and post it here.

I was lucky enough to be the temporary caretaker of this piece for over a decade.  It's still the best Cockrum commission I've ever seen!

These are great! TwoMorrows is actually coming out with a book soon by Jack C. Harris called "Working With Ditko" which has Star Guider on the cover. Hopefully the book will include some interesting backstory about this issue.
