Geo Matteo Curing the Daughter of Amadel by Fortunino Matania Owner: Brian Norton Comment posted on 5/7/2024 Matania never skimped on the details of his illustrations. Be it gesture, expression, texture, contrast or design. Every element reveals something about the period depicted and solidifies the overall composition. To think such brilliance was exhibited with piece after piece, week after week for many decades is astonishing. A true master of illustration!

Nice daily. I have a few from '56 and wondered if Godwin was an early adopter of a marker for some of the blacks...in particular the final panel shadows. I have trouble seeing a bruch make those lines. I have several like this. ![]() Interesting thought Jeff. I don't know anything about the early use or composition of markers, but I can see these large black areas being done by something like a filbert brush dipped right in the bottle. The heavy blacks aren't faded at all like I might suspect could be the case with an old marker. |

Astounding. Salinas' Cisco strips are a sight to behold. I've always felt that he was on par with Foster, Raymond & Frazetta in the pantheon of greats. Fantastic example of illustrative excellence! ![]() I absolutely agree John! The lively, yet controlled movement of his brushwork is close to Frazetta's and his eye for historical details on par with Foster. I like the inking on the original better - perhaps original final panel with the visual of the child getting slapped was too harsh as it is considerably softer in the published version ![]() Mark, I had the same thought as well.
