Ross Andru tribute, Spider-Man, Mary Jane, Green Goblin, Lizard, Doc Ock, etc. by Lou Russo Owner: L. Russo Comment posted on 4/14/2021
L. Russo said:
Update (check out the site below): Reggie C. contacted me and wrote: I spent the last two years tracking down Ross's real life inspirations for his Amazing Spider-Man artwork. Some were easy, like the Times Square fight with Will 'O the Wisp from ASM 168, others, like the Mindworm's home from ASM 138 took longer. The entire list is on this page along with some examples up top. This thread contains everything I put together over two years. https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/436992-ross-andrus-amazing-spider-man-club/page/48/#comments ![]() Thanks Lou, appreciate the shout out! Oh forgot to mention, your Doctor Octopus captures the spirit of his appearance in ASM 157 -159 perfectly. |

Amazing Spider-Man #157 page 16 - Ross Andru / Mike Esposito Owner: Comic Fanfare Comment posted on 2/15/2021 How the heck does this page not have more comments? Great action from a very fondly remembered issue from my youth. I loved the Hammerhead ghost as a kid and wondered how Spidey was going to save his aunt. Little did I imagine he would team up with Dr. Ock in the next couple of issues. Excellent page (would love to see a better scan of it). Thanks for sharing! |

Amazing Spider-Man-man 162 .....And Along Came..THE PUNISHER!!! Owner: Phoenix’s Galactic Gallery Comment posted on 1/6/2021 Wow, where to even begin. I guess congratulations to start. Just an amazing cover from a fondly remembered issue. Just seems like yesterday my 10 year self was buying this at the Army PX. I have always wondered the breakdown of contribution from both Ross and John on this issue, but both do a fantastic job. I've researched Ross Andru's real life references extensively the last two years and can say he masterfully recreated NYC, specifically here as well with the Queensboro Bridge and the Roosevelt Island Tram, featured predominantly in Issues 161 and 162. Again, congrats for obtaining this wonderful cover and thanks for sharing it with us mere mortals. |

Amazing Spider-Man 171 Owner: Jimmy Cawley Comment posted on 12/28/2020 Well, you know Ross strolled down Mott Street snapping pictures to model this page after. He put both the Golden Dragon Restaurant and the Quon Luck Restaurant in panel 2. And to make sure we knew where he set the scene, the The On Leong Tong Building on panel 3. Not sure who did all the inking on the brickwork, as Dave Hunt had left ASM be then, must have been Mike. Great story page, thanks for sharing. |

Amazing Spider-Man #89 p 5 (1970) Owner: Mike Burkey Comment posted on 7/13/2020 There was just something about Kane with Romita that made Spider-man more gritty in that early bronze era, which seemed appropriate with the death of Captain Stacey. Great page and thanks for sharing. |

Amazing Spider-Man 640 P.20 Owner: Bert M. Comment posted on 5/17/2020 I've been studying the late Ross Andru's background work for the last year. He put the Queensboro bridge in Amazing Spider-man quite a few times. Here Paolo knocks it out of the park. The bridge, the stack, the tall building with the terraces, all perfectly recreated. His Spider-man is pretty nice too. Thanks for sharing. |

Romita Jr - Punisher War Zone #1 p.16 (complete story) Owner: Francesco Bazzana Comment posted on 4/6/2020 The Quon Luck Restaurant was a real restaurant in NY Chinatown in the 70s. It was a little place on Mott Street, just off Canal though. Based on the striking resembalance to the front of the restaurant, I am certain John Romita Jr. used the real restaurant for his reference. I'm unsure when it closed or if it actually moved to Mulberry street (one street over from Mott). Oddly enough, this restaurant, though unnamed, was featured in a panel in ASM 171 by Ross Andru as well. |
