Goldtiger daily 1966 Antonio Barreti Owner: Jeff Singh Comment posted on 5/17/2016 Okay, I don't know exactly what the hell is going on with this whole thing, but there is no way this strip was drawn in the 60's. The style is way too contemporary and reminiscent of other modern day comic artists to have been done at any time other than within the last few years. And we're also supposed to believe the massive "coincidence" about the strip's villain resembling you AND sharing not only your name, but profession as well??? No way, dude! I'm not falling for it. Next time I see you, I'll gladly listen to you as you regale me with the story of how you and these 2 other dudes came up with the concept of putting together a few daily strips with you as the primary villain. Come to think of it, the fact that you mention Kickstarter reveals the truth. You paid for one of the more expensive "reward" categories and the reward was that they draw you into the strips, right?! Very clever.... |

Corto Maltese and the Dragonlady by TONE Owner: Jeff Singh Comment posted on 2/16/2016 I really didn't know what to expect from this commission, but I can honestly say that this wasn't it, and it's AMAAAAAAZING! So cool! Absolutely killer! Seriously, I don't even know where to begin...Everything, from the typography to staying true to the likenesses of the characters, and to the overall graphic design quality, is SPECTACULAR! I can't wait to see it on the wall, where the sheer size will also come into context. I hope you're as exited about it as I am. Congrats, man! |

The Body In The Bed paperback cover by Mitchell Hooks Owner: Brian Emrich Comment posted on 2/16/2016 My favorite Hooks period is when he began his switch from traditional painterly realism used up to around 1956, to his much bolder, graphic approach in the 1957 to 1959 period. But having said that, I'm a fan of most of his work and always appreciate seeing any of the vintage stuff pre-1970's. Great to see this original in particular, because every copy of the book I've ever seen was printed badly. Very cool! |

Curtains For A Lover Paperback cover by Ron Lesser Owner: Brian Emrich Comment posted on 2/16/2016 Cool, this is a classic Lesser! I've always enjoyed this one, though I personally would chalk up Lesser's anecdote about it to faulty memory. His sophisticated 'McGinnis' style as this one exhibits, developed between 1960 and 1962. As you can see with my Western he did in 1958, although it's nice and well done, it doesn't exhibit any of the interchangeable McGinnis/Lesser characteristics, and that makes sense given that it was likely his first cover. But I would be more likely to believe that Lesser's memory is a slightly mistaken version of reality. Meaning that this might have been the first one that he did in the McGinnis style to try to show publishers and be able to say "Hey, if that's what you guys want, I can do that too!". Either way, we'll never know for sure and it's a really neat piece to have. |

...but the other one titled Pleasure Island i wasn't familiar with. when i received them i didn't like Pleasure Island at all. could see where he had trouble getting the face right. you should ask him if he thinks your art is from his first published book. he does have fading memory so not sure if he could even answer that question anymore. ![]() Oh, I LOVE Pleasure Island! So much in fact that it now hangs on my wall! I would've preferred if he'd kept her eyes open, but aside from that and the fact that the face is darker due to the shadow from the hat she's wearing, I have no issues with her face. You're right about Lesser's memory not quite being sharp anymore. I did already show him the art several years ago and his immediate reaction was that Mel Crair had done it. When I told him it had his name and complete address on the back, all he said was "That IS where I was living in 1958, so I guess it IS mine! Hard to remember everything I did after all these years." |

i got this and another one six years ago and have since sold off the other one because in person i thought it wasn't that great. i love ron's work but it's very touch and go. i used to talk to him all the time because we live fairly close to each other. i was always going to pay him a visit and interview him but it never happened. i'm the one who hooked him up with charles of hard case crime to get him involved with painting some covers. i've known charles since he was a wee boy coming into forbidden planet in manhattan when i was a manager back in the mid to late eighties. ron used to offer me those hard case covers for $300 each once he got them back but i didn't want to pay him so little for them. i thought he deserved much more for them. i did buy one of his first pieces directly from him which i was going to list today. ![]() Oh wow, that was fairly recently then. Was this one of the ones you got directly from him? You've made me curious, do you recall the book title of the one you sold? Cool anecdote about Charles, thanks for sharing it. I look forward to seeing you post one of his earliest pieces. If you check out my Western gallery, you'll see that I own what I believe is his very 1st paperback cover! |

The Cruel Touch paperback cover by Paul Rader Owner: Brian Emrich Comment posted on 11/16/2015
Brian Emrich said:
it was a direct sale from illustration house just before i started working there. during a time when very few people wanted this stuff. i was big into it since early eighties but grew up on science fiction and horror so still love that stuff. i mainly list that type of thing here because it seems to fit in a little more so with the viewers plus i convinced dan zimmer to put it on his radar issue cover so possibly more people now know this image. i collect erotic art and sleaze more than anything. the competition is too steep for me on so much of the sci-fi stuff! i started collecting paperback art strictly at first but then branched off years later. you actually own an old piece of mine i got in a larger purchase of art from one publisher that a friend of mine originally owned. ![]() Oh that's right, it had slipped my mind that it was used on the Illustration cover. Well if you have other vintage paperback covers, I hope you'll continue to post them here in your gallery. I know what you mean about the values of the Sci-Fi art. Thankfully, that's one genre that never appealed to me enough to collect. Can you tell me more about this large art purchase from a publisher you mentioned? Those "warehouse find" stories are always fun to hear! Which of my pieces did you once own? |

Thanks! it's the second piece of original paperback art I ever bought back in 1990, and possible still may favorite! 90 bucks! ![]() Wow, 25 years ago? Amazing. Do you remember if it via auction or direct sale? I'm a bit surprised to hear that it may still be your favorite though, simply because it looks like you ultimately veered in more of a Science Fiction and Horror direction after buying it. Good to hear, though! |
