Eric - I think your comment on the temptation for some to dismiss this prototype is spot-on; I'm sure it may feel non-canonical for a subset of our community, particularly as it relates to how different Rorschach is visually presented. But, for me, it's a window into Dave Gibbons' creative process as he fleshed out the team at a very early stage - and I love that stuff!  I appreciate the kind words, and I will have to figure out how to show it to you in person one of these days!

Screw canonical.  I collect scripts for movies and TV shows, and the most enjoyable thing of all is getting early drafts.  That way, you can see the creative process that led to the final product.  That is art.  It is a process, and seeing it happen (not just an artist doing a piece beginning to end, but the first ideas to the final pice) is so exciting.

And that is what this piece is...exciting!

It's funny, because I was such a major fan of EC Comics, yet, when it came to Marvel and DC, it was all superhero or nothing with me.  I totally sluffed off all these not tight-wearing books and what I considered blah, boring art, etc.  Look at these covers!  Look at all the Ghosts, Unexpected, Witching Hours, etc pages on CAF.  I'm so glad I grew up and can appreciate how amazing all the work was on these books.

This cover, and all your horror pieces, are simply phenomenal.

This cover is, of course, fantastic, yet all I can think of every time I look at it is this quote from the Batman 1966 movie:

  • Bruce Wayne: How strange. I close my eyes, and l dream of something quite astonishingly different.

See, if Reagan hadn't gifted the wealthy with his giant tax cuts, Breathed never would have written this strip, and it would never have been burned into your brain, and you wouldn't have asked if Breathed still had it, and then he wouldn't have gifted it to you.  Therefore...you DID benefit from Reagan's tax cuts.  I guess, even though Reagan committed treason by making a deal with Iran to keep the hostages to help him get elected, he really was the friend of the little guy.
