Really cool to see Hampton's modern battle action interpretation of that particular cover since it had techniques which aren't used too often.  The red makes Hawkman's foes all the more sinister!

I love Hampton's watercolors going back to his Viking Prince comic and I think he made this work. The original was probably done in two pieces with Hawkman on one board and the phantoms on an overlay to allow the different color separations. Definitely not something seen a lot back in the day.

This is the great high level quality artwork that Willingham and Gustovich achieved in the bronze age and brought more attention to the indie scene of the 80's.  A great production in sci-fi fantasy where anything goes!

I agree even though I think the bronze age ended about the time of the indie boom of the 80s.

It's for a more modern DC character Colin Nomi from 2018.  You may have to check if this is the character creation drawings.

I had to look Colin Nomi up and found him in The Unexpected(2018).  My other style guide does have "Neon" and "Unexpected" written at the top.  Possibly Sook did the design work for the character or just made style guides for drawing the covers to The Unexpected.  I'm not really sure.

I'm surprised that he put so much work into these imaginary strips that were mostly hidden behind the characters and logo stuff on the covers.

Very true. Of course, my eye tended to be drawn to the hyena dog thing's ear being in front of her leg which quickly shows that the it is right against her leg.

I was a Marvel fan back in the 70s, with little interest in DC books, largey due to the rigid house style at DC.  But Neal was the one artist in those days who's work was so good that he stood out, despite adhering to the DC look.  What a legacy he leaves behind.  This is a very beautiful, lifelike, and recognizable portrait!

I was more of a comic book fan back then. I'd buy from any publisher as long as the story looked good. Of course, great artists like Neal (and Kane, Kirby, Wood, Andru, etc) jumping back and forth between companies helped.

Early-on, when I was pretty small, I would buy the JLA if I didn't have enough Money from my Paper Route to get more than a book or two.  Basically because almost all of DC's Characters would be in One Comic.... The Covers were awesome, usually Inked by Murphy... but when I got it home, I was always disappointed.

And then soon after, when I found Kirby's stuff over at Marvel, I thought Mike looked like Kirby on Acid.  And it also had a crazy Jack Davis quality that I didn't appreciate as a kid.  But strangely, I LOVED Jack Davis' Marvel Westerns.  Damn<

I would have loved if DC had Murphy ink the insides over Sekowsky.

It's a mystery why they stop coloring, but the truth is probably deadlines and it wasn't going to show up in published form anyways.  It does make a lot of these look very complete.

I think coloring the first 3-4 pages in manga is more of a stylistic choice to catch your attention. Those pages are  published in color in the big magazines but usually not in the collected trades (occasionally they are).  I think they have been doing it that way for decades.  When reading the manga collections, you can normally tell which pages were originally in color because they don't reproduce as well into black & white.
