Modern Comic Art Collector, (90's thru Present Day). Have always been a "Collector" from Graded Toys from my Childhood (G.I. Joe/Transformers), to the Modern Adult Collectibles such as Hot Toys & Comic Art Statues from the recent Marvel/MCU and DC/DCU movies over the past 10-years. My collecting journey made me eventually realize that SPACE ran out well before the MONEY, which may have helped steer me toward Original Art. The other issue of Rarity with Collectability is probably the other factor. I have always continued to keep up with comics, through digitally reading or the eventual trades, which has been the basis for how I collect my Original Art.
Focus has not been one of my strong suits in the OA hobby, as I collect what appeals to ME. In updating this at the start of 2025, I have continued to read Venom, Hulk, X-Men, Transformers Energon Universe, Geiger, and Redcoat. I tend not to collect backwards or seek out art from the books I read as a kid. My focus is on Modern Comis Art and collect Covers with images that appeal to me. If it's a cool cover, I tend to go after it. If its from one of my favorite Modern Comic Artists, I will tend to go after it. No much of an "example collector", although there are some Modern Artists that I want to have a piece from. I usually start the year with a Top 10 of Artists I want to secure a piece from and work off of that in some way.
I tend to be a more "private" collector, as I have only posted a fraction of my collection to my public CAF profile. All of my OA is actually posted to CAF, but the majority of my pieces private. I understand the purpose of CAF is to show and share your collection, which I am working toward doing. I have a hard time realizing that you cannot collect everything, and there should come a time where you have the hobby fund itself instead of continuing to invest new money into the hobby. I also see my overall collection as something to do when I retire. Right now I am still in the cultivating stages where I am undoubtedly buying more than I am selling. I am always open to trades and have never been bothered when collectors reach out to inquire about a piece. That is part of the fun, the art of the deal. Some find it stressfull, I enjoy it, whether a deal is consumated or not. I also will never take offense to an offer, whether I agree with it or not. There have been some in this hobby who have told me they are offended at a price. This goes for collectors and a well known Dealer who I will refain from naming. If someone is willing to offer their hard-earned money for soemthing you have, respect that, no matter the amount. Lastly, nothing is ever in my "permanent collection". It's a pepece of mine to see collectors write this in their CAF on pieces. There is no doubt I have pieces that I am not actievly looking to sell, but I believe everything has a price, as I believe most do. I feel the "permanent collection" is a ploy to try and dramatize the piece up in perceived value. So, what I am saying is, feel free to inquire, but please take no offense if I tell you I am not ready to sell or move on from piece in my personal collection. The good thing about CAF is I can notate on the piece in my "PERSONAL NOTES" when you reached out, so that when I am ready to sell, I can notify you. Looking forward to seeing CAF expland and grow the Original Comic Art Hobby. Feel free to email me anytime at modokmike77@gmail.com
