My first exposure to comics was when I was pretty young. It was just random stuff picked up at the grocery or drug store, but I think I read more actual books with super heroes than comics.
The second go around my uncle handed me Kraven's Last Hunt. I started enthusiastically reading Spider-Man. Then picked up a Batman habit, and it was all over for me. Eventually I stopped borrowing from my uncle's collection and started grabbing my own. The first comic I bought was the TPB of The Dark Knight Returns. For individual issues, I think it was Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn, or maybe Batman post Jason Todd / pre Tim Drake.
I started frequenting comic shops weekly in high school. I ran into Grant Morrison and Dave McKean on their tour for Arkham Asylum. Neil Gaiman popped by for signings in my area quite often before he became famous. I also nabbed Frank Miller's signature on a rainy night during his original Sin City tour.
Eventually I started reading Comic Buyer's Guide and going to conventions. Chicago Comicon was nearly in my backyard so I went every year, mostly to meet the talent. But I discovered artist alley and the art dealer tables.
Back in college, I wrote a story on art collecting for a journalism class when I first entered the hobby. This was around the death of Superman. I've been collecting original comic art since.
My son, who is 5 as I write this, has become a serious Batman and JLA fanatic. His first art piece is a splash from Howard Porter. Well, it's not really his yet. I still claim ownership, but it's going up in his room.
