From the feature “The Dumbest People, Events and Things of 2002!”As of when I’m typing this, it’s been only a day since we lost one of the all-time great humor artists, the amazing Al Jaffee. I never personally met the man, but I’ve enjoyed his brilliant work since I purchased my first issue of MAD back in 1989. I was fortunate to attend multiple MAD panels at NYCC over the years, so I did get to see Al in person where it was clear that his mind was sharper than people half a century or more younger than him. For that, I consider myself lucky. I also consider myself lucky to have a piece of original art created by Al. While MAD’s switch to color shortly before this issue appeared was controversial at the time, it meant we got painted pieces like this.
