DescriptionB.P.R.D. was a series I connected with from the very beginning of my comic-reading life. It aligned perfectly with my tastes—so much so that it felt like a world I could inhabit. The series blended elements I deeply respond to: eerie, atmospheric mysteries; vast Lovecraftian cosmic threats; striking grotesque creature design; and visceral, military-driven action. Few series balance these components as effectively as B.P.R.D.Among its many story arcs, Killing Ground stands as my favorite. It functions as a tightly constructed, claustrophobic creature-feature, evoking the tension and dread of films like Alien and The Thing. Beneath its brutal man-versus-monster framework, the story delivers the culmination of long-running mysteries, with payoffs that resonate both within the arc itself and in subsequent narratives. Stories like this firmly established B.P.R.D. as equal to—if not surpassing—the core Hellboy series in scope and execution. Guy Davis’s artwork is a major reason for that impact. He is one of my favorite artists to have worked in comics, bringing a distinctive cartoonist sensibility paired with exceptional creature design. His work strikes a rare balance between stylization and menace. As a collector, I typically seek a single representative piece from artists I admire, rarely pursuing multiple works from the same creator or series. B.P.R.D.—and Guy Davis in particular—is a rare exception, which speaks to the lasting influence the series has had on me. While I miss his presence in comics, it’s been gratifying to see his talents continue to thrive in film, where his design work remains just as compelling. This cover for B.P.R.D.: Killing Ground features the fan-favorite character Daryl the Wendigo, depicted stalking the claustrophobic corridors of B.P.R.D. headquarters as he looms ominously behind Captain Ben Daimio.
