DescriptionI got this Dan Day "Cases of Sherlock Holmes" page from a recent Heritage Auction (my first HA win). Even with the BP and the shipping and handling charges, it did not break the bank, but, hey, some pages don't need to be record-setting celebrations of comic art to be greatly appreciated (by me, anyway). The premise of the series, which was published in 1986 by Deni Loubert's short-lived Renegade Press, was simple, Dan took the original Conan Doyle stories (issue #1 kicked off with "The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet"), and then built lavishly illustrated montages around the original text. Day modeled his Holmes after the great Basil Rathbone, who, if you don't know, played the great detective in 14 or so movies from the late 30s to the mid-40s, and this series, to quote from the Heritage Auction description, "was all the better for it." Aside from Rathbone, Day often populated his stories with "special guest stars," one of the many joys of this series. Dan Day is best known for his run on Marvel's Master of Kung Fu, but if you have ever read this series (and chances are, sadly, you probably haven't), you know it was a true labor of love by the artist. This particular page, which is designed much like a regular panel page, shows Holmes and Watson consulting with the banker, Alexander Holder, whose son, Arthur, is jailed after being accused of stealing three beryls (similar to emeralds) off the titular coronet (which the banker had been keeping in the safe at his house). Of course, Holmes is intrigued enough to take the case. Day, during the course of the series, did far more intricate pages than this, but I liked this one for the shots of his Rathbone-inspired Holmes, a brief panel of Doctor Watson where Day used the likeness of Rathbone's co-star, Nigel Bruce, and all the wonderful inking techniques, including quite a bit of crosshatching, Day used to enhance the look of the art. Honestly, this is a comic book series that should get more love, especially from comic art collectors, but, happily, for me (and my bank account), not everybody has caught on yet. Social/Sharing |
