Description

DISNEY COMBAT INSIGNIA PAINTED ON FUSELAGE PART. THIS IS THE 531st BOMB SQUADRON, STATIONED IN FENTON, AUSTRALIA,1943; ONE OF THE FOUR ORIGINAL SQUADRONS OF THE 380th BOMB GROUP. The term "nose art" is used because the art was usually found near the nose of the airplane. Most of the images were of pinup girls, but about 30% were cartoons. Many of the cartoons were Disney and Warner Brothers characters. Most images were painted by hired professionals, with many by base personnel who were amateur artists. Hank Porter did not apply this to the aircraft but by someone else who duplicated his original art that was supplied by the Walt Disney studio. If a product of the studio then I attribute the original from which this was made to be Hank Porters work based on the date shown on the nose art. Fenton Airfield was a World War 2 military airfield in the Northern Territory of Australia located at Tipperary Station in what is now the locality of Douglas-Daly. Entering combat in May 1943 they flew B-24 Liberators against Japanese forces in the Netherlands East Indies, the northwestern area of operations, and the South West Pacific Area. Not all was easy at Fenton Airfield as the Japanese attacked the base on 13 August 1943 (9:45pm), 13 August 1943 (11:12pm}, and 21 August 1943 (03:07pm). - The Rising Sun flags on the nose art represent Japanese aircraft kills by this individual bomber. - This art had been downloaded on 3/1/2006 and had 860 views when I changed my synopsis on 8/22/2021.
