DescriptionAn elderly Japanese man in a stylish suit, thinking I was Jim Cheung, walked up to me, extended his hand, and said in fairly natural English, "Hello, nice to meet you. I'm the man who invented tentacle sex." And that was how I met Toshio Maeda. Why did Maeda-san think I was Jim Cheung? That story's not so interesting. It's a "Six Degrees of Yoshi" story. Basically, my friend Yoshi, who has connections with nearly everybody, got Jim to come over to Japan for one of his comic art shows and asked me to help Jim run his table. He also got Maeda-san to visit. So, it was all a matter of timing. Maeda-san, who read American comics in his youth, wanted to introduce himself to a visiting fellow comic artist. However, when Maeda-san entered the room, Jim had left the table to stretch his legs and left me to look after things, and, because he didn't know what Jim looked like... "Hello, nice to meet you. I'm the man who invented tentacle sex." Speaking of tentacle sex, I first became aware of Maeda's work when I rented a VHS copy of Urotsukidoji (AKA Legend of the Overfiend). Not knowing what to expect, I took it home, started watching it, and was (I believe the word is) gobsmacked. Tentacle sex, indeed! I cannot say I've ever been a big fan of Maeda-san's manga. I have sneaked a peek or two at his work and admire his artistic acumen, but his stories are not my cup of green tea. Still, some guy on eBay started selling pages from the 1988 series, Chōjū Densetsu (超獣伝説/Legend of the Superbeast), and this one contained PG-rated content, looked cool, and, was, relatively, cheap, so I put in a bid and won. Thus, gentle reader, I can post this page and tell you this story. You're welcome. Social/Sharing |
