DescriptionThis stunning Incal page is the last page from The Black Incal, which is the first issue of the first volume of The Incal Saga (the 44th page in the first volume overall). More specifically, this page is from The Metabaron chapter, which serves as an introduction to the character of the same name, who is also the universe's greatest mercenary. The Black Incal was published in 1981 by Les Humanoïdes Associés. It was written by Alejandro Jodorowsky, illustrated by Moebius, and colored by Yves Chaland. However, one thing to note is that while the coloring of The Incal series is credited to Yves Chaland, he did not care for the job, and his wife, Isabelle Beaumenais-Joannet, actually did the work for him. She's usually noted to have completed the colors for the 2nd through 4th issues (while Zoran Janjetov colored the 5th & 6th). Still, the credit to Yves Chaland for the 1st issue is likely a placeholder recognizing the fact that he was initially assigned the work. But Isabelle Beaumenais-Joannet colored the 1st issue, as well. The Incal is often regarded as one of the greatest comic stories ever created. To make a very long, trippy, sci-fi story short, it tells the tale of John Difool, ‘a class ‘R’ licensed private investigator with little direction in his life, and his encounter with a pyramid shaped piece of glass known as the Incal. Fate, chance and circumstance push them together and the combination is powerful, dazzling and quasi-psychedelic. As the Incal states to Difool early on, ‘destiny has brought us together to restore justice to the universe.’ How's that for setting the scope of the story? In my extremely humble opinion, this page is just a glorious Moebius example. It's beautifully composed and contains incredible detail while never being crowded as it advances a critical element of the story and leaves us perfectly hanging in advance of the next issue, The Luminous Incal. One other interesting side note in relation to this page; it has had three owners since it was created in 1980/81 - first Moebius, then Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons...and now me! Social/Sharing |
