M.A.S.K. #1 Cover by Tommy Lee Edwards
Featured: 12/1/2025
Owner Chris Snorek
Everything old is new again! Many Generation X and older Millennials will fondly remember the adventures of M.A.S.K. the Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, a secret organization of agents with heavily armed vehicles that would transform into other vehicles and helmets with a wide array of useful capabilities. For example, this featured cover by Tommy Lee Edwards from the 2016 IDW series is dominated by mission leader Matt Trakker whose Spectrum mask gives him control over light and energy and pilots Thunderhawk, a car which converts into a jet. Most recently, the team has been incorporated into Skybound's Energon universe alongside GI Joe and Transformers.
Beginning today, all of Edwards' original artwork available through the Artists Bullpen will be discounted 25% off for their annual holiday sale which runs all the way till New Year's Eve. And, of course, Edwards will join us next February in Orlando, FL for the third annual Original Art Expo (OAX). His pre-show commission list has officially opened on the website. |
Spider-man Spidey Super Stories #42 pg 27
Featured: 11/30/2025
Owner Anthony Guerriero
Before Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, or even Nicholas Hammond donned the red-and-blue costume of Spider-Man, the very first to do so in live action was Danny Seagren on The Electric Company. While he never spoke or showed his face, Seagren's Spidey Super Stories helped kids learn to read while he mimed kid-friendly superhero action and only communicated via thought bubbles. For many fans of a certain age it was their first exposure to the friendly neighborhood wallcrawler and the Marvel tie-in series was their first comic book.
"I never felt silly. I was focused on trying to be a superhero," Seagren said in an interview. "I always took it seriously. I tried to keep it in mind that I was powerful and strong. But, at the same time, I was fighting bad guys like Mr. Measles and the Sitter, who was a guy in drag. The situations were silly but I tried to rise above them. I had to be a little bit campy for the whole thing. I really enjoyed doing it." Sadly, Seagren passed away recently at the age of 81 years old. On behalf of the CAF community, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans. |
Witchblade #10
Featured: 11/29/2025
Owner Bill Woo
As part of the Image revolution of the 90s, Witchblade became a popular character with the fans very quickly and soon began to expand into what would become the Top Cow universe. On this cover by co-creator and Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri, Witchblade is the central figure of the piece but surrounded by demonic-looking characters and a shadowy figure lurking behind her. An ominous looking skull with a root growing out of the eye socket looms over all of them. That figure would ultimately be revealed [in his first appearance] as Jackie Estacado, a mob enforcer who wields the Darkness, a counterpoint to the Witchblade which is carried by police officer Sara Pezzini.
"I came up with the basic concept of the Darkness a few years before we actually started work on it," Silvestri said in an interview. "Other projects kept moving forward and the concept of a hero with powers that could only work in the dark (essentially a super-powered Dracula without the fangs) got put on a shelf. Top Cow was riding high off the success of Witchblade so the timing was perfect to launch another supernatural character out of it." |
Street Code page 2 by Jack Kirby (1983)
Featured: 11/28/2025
Owner Chrissie Harper
Before Captain America threw his mighty shield or the Silver Surfer soared the spaceways of the galaxy, even before there was a Jack "King of Comics" Kirby, Jacob Kurtzberg was the child of poor immigrants living on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He chronicled his upbringing in a semi-autobiographical ten-page comic in 1983; this featured page shows readers what the tiny apartment he shared with his family looked like.
This weekend the Jack Kirby Museum and Research Center will host an opening reception for a pop up honoring Kirby's humble beginnings at One Art Space in Tribeca. The exhibition opens today and will run till Sunday, December 7th. Featured artwork will include more images from Street Code as well as his famous superhero creations. Rub elbows with CAF's own CEO Kasra Ghanbari, VP of Operations Matt DiTullio, and In-House Counsel Gamal Hennessy who will be in attendance to discuss the upcoming Jack & Roz Kirby Awards, which will have its first award ceremony at OAX 2026 in February. |
Terry and the Pirates/Steve Canyon Thanksgiving Feast (1987)
Featured: 11/27/2025
Owner R Berman
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Today is the day we gather with friends and family to appreciate all the good things in our lives and hope for more in the future.
This featured image was drawn by Milton Caniff, one of the most prolific and influential cartoonists of the Golden Age. He has depicted a Thanksgiving feast with the cast of his two most famous strips appearing dressed like Pilgrims. Terry and the Pirates are seated on the left side while Steve Canyon and his crew are on the other side. This image is dated 1987 which meant it was the final Thanksgiving Caniff would live to see. Two years prior, he joined fellow cartoonists Garry Trudeau and Charles M. Schulz in sending a letter to their fellow cartoonists to dedicate their Thanksgiving strips to the topic of ending world hunger. More than 175 of them participated on November 28, 1985 in a show of solidarity to the cause. |
Dan Brereton - Thrillkiller Batgirl
Featured: 11/26/2025
Owner Milos K
Inspiration for a comic can come from just about anywhere. For the Thrillkiller Elseworlds series it was watching old movies. Artist Dan Brereton, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday, based this featured version of Batgirl on one of the biggest stars of the swinging 60s.
"When we were first throwing around the ideas for Thrillkiller, [writer Howard Chaykin] and I ... were both watching [American Movie Classics], and we were talking about how Ann Margaret and Elvis Presley were the models on which Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson were going to be based, the Elvis Presley and Ann Margaret you saw in Viva Las Vegas," Brereton said in an interview. "That was our jumping off point for the characters and their relationship, looking at Robin as being this rockabilly rebel and Barbara Gordon as an heiress thrillseeker, who is a little older. We had a lot more hard-boiled feel to what we wanted to do in the beginning but we had to kind of water it down slightly for DC." |
Superman VS Captain Marvel (Shazam!) by Jerry Ordway
Featured: 11/25/2025
Owner Vito L
Comic creator Jerry Ordway is a writer and artist with a long history on both Superman and Captain Marvel's titles. Naturally, this featured commission sets the two of them against one another high above the Metropolis skyline. Given his experience with both characters and the long-standing question among fans about which is stronger, it is something that Ordway has had to address professionally.
"That's something we did put thought into and and one of the things that even before Alex Ross and did his Kingdom Come when we discussed the idea that since Superman had that weakness to magic that that was the fatal flaw," Ordway said in an interview. "I mean, Superman technically would be stronger except that, you know, the magic itself gave Captain Marvel [his powers]." He does go on to say that it may be psychological that Superman is susceptible to magic as part of his human upbringing rather than a physical flaw. |
Chris Sprouse: STAR WARS Doctor Aphra #32 “TEEBO & THE EWOKS” Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary cover 18 of 40
Featured: 11/24/2025
Owner Larry Jones
Forty years ago today, Star Wars fans were sitting around their televisions for the premiere of Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, the second of two made-for-TV specials starring Wicket and his family on the forest moon of Endor. While the Ewoks are divisive for many fans, they were unequivocally popular with kids following their debut in 1983's Return of the Jedi. While not strictly canon, the special did introduce elements such as the blurrg creatures that were shown in The Mandalorian and Teek, whose species showed up in Skeleton Crew. It is also significant for its use of stop-motion animation and latent image matte painting techniques.
This featured cover art by Chris Sprouse depicts a group of Ewok warriors led by Teebo in the pig-snout headdress. Sprouse is no stranger to Star Wars covers and puts a great deal of detail into each one making it feel like they just stepped off the screen. It was originally published as a variant cover for an issue of Doctor Aphra honoring the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. |
Eduardo Risso Batman Broken City issue 625 pg. 18
Featured: 11/23/2025
Owner Andrea Saladino
A flashback to the Crime Alley murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne dominates the composition of this featured page. Young Bruce stands still between his parents and their murderer, paralyzed with shock in the face of such a heinous act. The gritty alley is illuminated by a single streetlight concentrating all the action, with the lights of the theatre seemingly far away. In the present, Batman has discovered in the sewers a discarded pistol that was apparently used in a similar crime that also resulted in a young boy being orphaned.
Argentine artist Eduardo Risso's bold composition and stark use of ink and shadows sets the scene as a crime noir story of times past, replacing Sam Spade with the Dark Knight. This is just one of Risso's frequent collaborations with writer Brian Azzarello most notably 100 Bullets, Spaceman, Moonshine, and their partnership continues today in titles such as The Blood Brothers Mother. |
Jared Cullum commission Usagi Kaito '84
Featured: 11/22/2025
Owner Matt Dicke
The world of Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo is headed to the grim and gritty 1980s in a new series which follows a streetwise thief named Kaito who is a descendant of the samurai rabbit. Seen here in a painted commission, this project fulfills a childhood dream for artist Jared Cullum.
"I spent much of the early 1990s, as a kid, carrying around a tattered Usagi Yojimbo action figure in my pocket and filling countless notebooks with poorly drawn bunny-eared and bandana-clad stick-figure comics," Cullum said in a statement. "To say Kaitō ’84 was a childhood dream project wouldn't be correct, because I never even fathomed this as a possibility. It's such a deep, humbling honor to play in this sandbox." As everyone knows, Cullum is just one of the dozens of guest artists who will join on February 20-22, 2026 in Orlando, FL for the third annual Original Art Expo (OAX). His pre-show commission list is open now on the website. |
2021 Sketchbook Cover
Featured: 11/21/2025
Owner Jeremiah Avery
Artist Terry Moore is well known for his admiration for beautiful women protagonists as seen in his creator owned series such as Strangers in Paradise, Rachel Rising, Echo, and Motor Girl. This cover art to his 2021 Sketchbook makes light of the artistic dilemma of being so enamored of the model the artist does not pay attention to the painting. Katchoo is obviously more interested in staring at Francine here and just fingerpaints a smiley face on her easel. Moore's pencils give the image a great deal of details and texture, particularly in the grain of the wood on the easel and chair and in the floral pattern of Francine's dress.
Running now on Kickstarter is a crowdsourcing campaign for an expanded edition of Moore's long out-of-print How to Draw books. These new editions will include extra chapters with new material and artwork. Reward tiers include a number of pieces of art by Moore himself. While it is already fully funded, this campaign comes to a conclusion next week so if you want to pledge, do so sooner rather than later. |
Lonergan - Calvin & Hobbes commission panel 2
Featured: 11/20/2025
Owner Simon M.
This week marks the fortieth anniversary of the very first Calvin and Hobbes strip being published in newspapers. Created by Bill Watterson, Calvin was an energetic six year old boy with an active imagination who went on adventures with his [stuffed] tiger Hobbes.
Watterson famously donated nearly all of his originals to the archive of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at the Ohio State University so it is incredibly rare to find one available in the private market. At the moment, the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY has running till the end of the year an exhibition of Calvin and Hobbes originals on loan. This featured piece by Jesse Lonergan is an homage to the sci-fi antics of Spaceman Spiff, Calvin's alter ego who routinely crashed his ship on a far off planet. Lonergan has cited Watterson's unique storytelling and artistic style as a significant inspiration for his own comics. |
Vampirella (1992) #1 pg. 21
Featured: 11/19/2025
Owner Eldon M
It is with great sadness that we have to report that comic artist Louis Small Jr. passed away this week following a long struggle with cancer.
In 1992 after serving in the Army, Small pursued his dream of becoming a comic artist, learning to draw from an art book. He brought his portfolio to some conventions and ultimately broke into the industry pencilling a relaunch of Vampirella for Harris Comics. This featured page comes from his very first issue on the title. "It was my dream to draw her as I used to read the Warren Vampirella, Creepy, and Eerie Comics in my youth," Small told an interviewer. He quickly gained a reputation for being a "Good Girl" artist and worked for Valiant, DC, Marvel, Continuity, and other publishers on a variety of titles. At Vertigo Small co-created the series Codename: Knockout, which was about a sexy secret agent and her very adult oriented adventures. He was regular fixture at conventions on the East coast for many years to meet fans and draw commissions. On behalf of the CAF community, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans around the world. |
Justice League of America (JLA) 29 Page 10 by Sekowsky/Sachs
Featured: 11/18/2025
Owner Alex Johnson
The multiverse concept first was established in the classic "Flash of Two Worlds" story where Barry Allen, the Silver Age Flash of Earth-1, met Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash who lives on Earth-2. It was an innovative storytelling trick to allow for both versions to exist side-by-side. But unfortunately for the Justice League, not all of their counterparts share their ideals. This issue introduced Earth-3, a world where evil is a virtue, and its champions the Crime Syndicate of America.
In this featured page penciled by Mike Sekowsky the Flash battles Ultraman, Superman's counterpart from Earth-3. Naturally, Flash assumes that someone with all of Superman's strength would also share his weaknesses but quickly learns to his dismay that the only effect kryptonite has on the supervillain is to make him even more powerful. The idea of the evil counterpart has become a popular trope in science fiction across mediums as a fun way to explore the dark side of an otherwise altruistic character. |
Cook, Katie

Owner John Higashi
Happy Life Day, everyone! On this day in 1978 took place the first and only airing of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special which introduced audiences to Chewbacca's homeworld of Kashyyyk and his wife, father, and son. The plot revolves around Chewie and Han Solo flying home to celebrate Life Day, the Wookiee holiday in which they don red robes and carry globes of light as shown in the featured illustration by Katie Cook. The original Star Wars cast reunited for the first time after A New Hope, much to their chagrin today, and were joined by comedians such as Art Carney, Harvey Korman, and Bea Arthur.
While the show is very dated and well-deserving of criticism, it did mark the very first appearance of the popular character Boba Fett in an animated short created by Nelvana Studios. Bootleg VHS copies were highly sought after in the pre-Internet world and creator George Lucas reportedly once said, "If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it." |
Lola XOXO vol 2 #3 Cincinnati Expo Variant Cover - Siya Oum
Featured: 11/16/2025
Owner Brian C.
As everyone knows, Tatiana Dykes welcomed Siya Oum onto the CAF+ YouTube channel last night as part of Comic Art LIVE to chat about her career and promote both her Neo Wonderland Kickstarter, which closes next week, and her upcoming appearance at the third annual Original Art Expo [OAX].
This featured image is from her first creator-owned series Lola XOXO which she describes as a post-apocalyptic book about a young woman raised in the wasteland in a bunker with her three godfathers and finds out how dangerous the world can be once she leaves that sanctuary. This variant cover was an exclusive for the Cincinnati Comic Expo and depicts the title character posed in front of a bridge and cityscape, decayed by time and neglect. This is specifically the Cincinnati-Covington Bridge which spans the Ohio River and connects the city to Kentucky, no doubt in honor of the convention's location. Last night Oum also officially opened her pre-OAX commission list on the TDArt website. Lock in yours today, because this is a rare opportunity and they are very limited. |
Avengers (2010) #12.1, pps.4-5
Featured: 11/15/2025
Owner Jason Hussa
Bring on the bad guys! The mad scientists of the Marvel Universe have banded together as the Intelligencia, basically an evil version of the Illuminati. Spider-Woman would probably roll over these nerds one-on-one, but up against this powerhouse of a team-up, she probably needs to call in the rest of the Avengers. Bryan Hitch's composition of the piece has her literally backed into a corner as the villains advance. This type of double page spread full of characters is the exact type of widescreen cinematic scene that he excels at, coupled with fantastic detail on each figure makes it an incredibly dynamic image.
As everyone knows, Hitch will join us today at 3pm EST for a live art sale on CAF+ part of the Comic Art LIVE weekend. He will also be opening a brand new commission list, so you do not want to miss out on this one. |
Paul Pelletier - Superman Giant 3 Page 8
Featured: 11/14/2025
Owner Al Simpleton
This week Mike Perkins shared the sad news that veteran inker Andrew 'Drew' Hennessy passed away last month. Henessy was a well-respected artist who graduated from the Pratt Institute and multiple titles including Ultimate Spider-Man, Superman, All-New X-Men, Detective Comics, Aquaman, and more. His loss was eulogized by colleagues such as Brad Walker, Mark Bagley, Bart Sears, Pablo Raimondi, Rick Magyar, and more.
Paul Pelletier, who first worked with Hennessy at CrossGen said of his frequent collaborator, "Ask anyone who knows me and who I'd name as my favorite inkers to work with… Drew is always among the top three names. It was always such a treat seeing his pages roll in on screen… even better when I'd get one of his industrial strength packaging jobs returning original art pages. His inks were astounding. I tried to work with Drew as much as I could over the last ten years… I just wish it could have been more." On behalf of the CAF community, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans around the world. |
