Batman/Houdini by Mark Chiarello
Featured: 11/13/2025
Owner Doctor Fantastic
Artist Mark Chiarello approached writer Howard Chaykin about doing a project together in the mid-90s and the result was an Elseworlds period piece teaming up Batman with a real life man of mystery, Harry Houdini. This featured painting depicts Batman as he appeared in the book, with a greatcoat rather than a cape and body armor.
Chiarello recalled a story about literally putting his blood into the art of the project, "I remember I finished that first page, and it came out good, and I turned to put it next to me on the table and there was an X-Acto knife next to me, and I jabbed it right in my finger by mistake. Being a klutz, I just went oh! And I was bleeding all over the place, and I took the painting, the original piece of art, and I wiped my finger on the back of it, and there was a big blood stain on the back of it." As everyone knows, Chiarello has officially opened his commission list for the upcoming Original Art Expo (OAX) which may be booked now at the link. |
Green Lantern (vol. 2) #148 pg 24- 2nd Ch'P page from 1st app issue
Featured: 11/12/2025
Owner Jason R
To protect the universe and keep the peace, the Guardians of Oa tap the bravest residents of each of the 3600 designated sectors to join the Green Lantern Corps. Given the width and breadth of the universe, corps members come in a variety of shapes and sizes. As seen in this featured page, Ch'p of the planet H'laven is a small rodent similar to a squirrel or chipmunk but still uses his ring to save a crashing helicopter and protect the onlookers from a fire.
Writer Paul Kupperberg wrote about this very issue on his blog. "I'm sure it was the luck of the draw that editor Dave Manak handed the script for this untitled inaugural installment of an ongoing Tales of the Green Lantern Corps back-up story to Don Newton (with [Dan Adkins] inks), but we struck gold that day with the introduction of Ch'p, the chipmunk GL from the planet H'lven. (H'lven and a chipmunk. Get it?)" |
Duke #1 page 1 by Tom Reilly
Featured: 11/11/2025
Owner Ken Martin
Happy Veteran's Day to everyone who has served in the armed forces! In the world of G.I. Joe, the character Duke is held up on a pedestal of the perfect soldier, an ideal for others to strive for. This montage page from the first issue depicts his history in the military, from coming up through boot camp to lead a squad in battle to rescuing civilians from a flood to finally flying a jet and coming face-to-face with a Decepticon.
Artist Tom Reilly said to GamesRadar about his work on the title, "It's been challenging, because there's a lot of real life military tech that I've had to research. I'm trying to keep things pretty grounded. This is also just a different type of story - over the last few years I've been doing more bombastic superhero stuff and this is a more grounded story. So I'm trying to approach it in a little bit of a different way." For the month of November, all of Reilly's original artwork from Duke are 30% off (use code joevember30) and G.I. Joe are 20% off (use code joevember20) through Modern Mythology Comic Art. |
Thor God of Thunder 1 and 2 Covers Esad Ribic
Featured: 11/10/2025
Owner Dean Abraham
The life of Thor, God of Thunder is chronicled in this interconnecting cover by painter Esad Ribic. From a callow youth to the hero he is best known to be and finally the lonely king of a post-apocalyptic future. Lurking in the corner is Gorr the God Butcher, the villain of the story.
"Esad is doing what I think will be a defining take on this character for a long time to come. The pages have been just amazing. All I do is get out of the way and let him go," Writer Jason Aaron said at the time. "It's jaw-dropping work. I'm just trying to give him enough stuff to go wild with. He's getting to design new locations, new sorts of cities of the gods, obviously a whole new villain, and new creatures swirling around him. Esad has been sinking his teeth into all that stuff and making it his own." As everyone knows, Ribic will join us next February in Orlando, FL for the third annual Original Art Expo (OAX). Commissions are available now for purchase through the website at the link. |
Batman Annual Issue 2 Page 29
Featured: 11/9/2025
Owner Patrick Le Cerf
Despite the driving rain, Catwoman crouches over a skylight to ply her trade as she breaks into a museum for a robbery in this page drawn by veteran artist Lee Weeks. The composition places the small details and close ups in the panels down the left hand side of the page while the splashy full body image of Catwoman getting drenched takes up the right hand side. Overall, this image captures the anticipation of the action moments before it begins.
"He is just a joy to work with. He's one of the great storytellers in the history of the form, where he takes small moments and makes them intimate and human," Writer Tom King said of collaborating with Weeks in an interview with Nerdist. "He doesn't draw so many lines to show movement, but he draws the moment before the movement so you're anticipating what’s coming. He's a genius of the form and has been for 30 years." |
Disney Princesses Selfie - Peejay
Featured: 11/8/2025
Owner Troy Rubizovsky
For many artists creating a good commission is a point of pride, both in keeping the client satisfied with the purchase and showing off their skills. However, when taking on commissions for this past year's Original Art Expo (OAX), Peejay Catacutan bit off a little more than he expected when he agreed to draw the entire lineup of Disney animated princesses from Snow White to Moana.
"I learned from last year because last year when I offered a cover quality option and we were talking on this same show and you guys asked me like what are your limits blah blah blah and I was like uh whatever, I can do anything and there are no limits. And then this one client asked me to draw the entire Disney princesses. Yeah, that was me shooting myself in the foot," Catacutan said on this week's episode of CAF Update. "I actually really enjoyed it. For real, it was fun. It was just overwhelming." As everyone knows, Catacutan and eight more OAX 2026 guests opened their pre-show commission lists this week. Go to the website and grab yours while they are available. |
HOUSE OF M #5 PAG 16-17
Featured: 11/7/2025
Owner Gerard Nadal
Even in a parallel universe some things stay the same. Here we find a group of familiar faces joining together to organize the rebellion against Magneto and the House of M. Even though only Cloak, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, and Spider-Man are in costume, the keen Marvel fan can still find their favorite heroes in this double page spread drawn by artist Olivier Coipel.
"I think he's a fantastic penciller. He was my first choice. I fell in love with his work on Avengers when I was doing my research on Disassembled. I was thrilled that he was available," writer Brian M. Bendis said at the time in an interview. "It's one of those books I do kinda feel bad handing it in because it's a very visual book. I could write "a thousand people run through the streets" and I'm off to the next panel and he's stuck drawing a thousand people running through the streets. But he's handling it tremendously and I'm thrilled." |
Action 1064 and Superman 13 covers by Sandoval
Featured: 11/6/2025
Owner Miki Annamanthadoo
The last Kryptonians go head to head with an army of Czarnians in a full on battle of extinction on this interconnecting double cover by Rafa Sandoval. Given that Lobo by himself can fight the Man of Steel to a standstill on his own, can even the entire House of El protect the earth from an unkillable horde of his clones? This storyline heralded the introduction of the Brainiac Queen, a potentially even more ruthless enemy for Superman than the classic villain ever was, seen here observing the action from above.
This image captures the gravitas of the moment by having an angry Superman with his fists clenched and ready to unleash his heat vision beset on all sides by the Czarnians while Steel, Super-Man, Superboy, and Supergirl throw themselves into the fray. The two Brainiacs hovering over the melee gives them the idea of gods manipulating events for their own pleasure like in a Greek drama. |
X-Men #20 Cover by Andy Kubert
Featured: 11/5/2025
Owner Wolvie Fan
The Blue team of the X-Men reacts to the off-screen surprise appearance of someone no ever expected to return, the original Betsy Braddock, now inhabited by the consciousness of Revanche, the Hand assassin whose body Psylocke now occupies. While everyone looks shocked, Wolverine and Gambit (who never met Psylocke prior to her trip through the Siege Perilous) look absolutely ready to throw down.
This issue was early in Andy Kubert's initial run on the title and already shows his ability to pose large groups of characters while remaining engaging. Prior to his career drawing superhero comics, Kubert studied commercial design including packaging artwork. This background likely contributed to his strong focus on visual storytelling and dynamic page layouts. This Saturday, November 8th Kubert will make a rare signing appearance at Dewey's Comic City in Dover, NJ from 1PM-3PM. He will be signing copies of his brand new book The X-Men Art of Andy Kubert. The shop will also host a raffle for one lucky fan to take home an original sketch. |
MUTTS Handcolored Daily 10/11/01
Featured: 11/4/2025
Owner Hans Kosenkranius
Cartoonist Patrick McDonnell is currently on a book tour for his latest book The Gift of Everything. Best known for the playful antics of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat, his daily comic strip Mutts has delighted readers for over 30 years in more than 700 newspapers around the world.
"Mutts was and is inspired by my studying my pets. So it has always been about the "little things." A nap in a sunbeam, a walk with a friend, a kind gesture. I love exploring life from the perspective of animals because they remind us how to be present," McDonnell told Comics Beat in an interview. "The meta moments, like when Mooch and Earl seem aware they're in a comic strip, are playful ways to remind us to pause and notice the moment we're in. I've always loved art about art."
McDonnell will appear on Wednesday, November 12th at 4pm for a special fundraising event for the Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas, CA. This event will include a live auction offering the rare opportunity for McDonnell to draw the winner's pet in an upcoming Mutts strip.

Rocket Raccoon Shooting Galactus while watering Groot!
Featured: 11/3/2025
Owner Matthew Sardo
Even the most powerful being in the Marvel universe should know better than to interrupt Rocket Raccoon while he attends his horticultural duties to a recuperating Groot. Rocket is so focused on giving his arboreal best friend a nourishing drink of water he executes a perfect no-look, behind the back shot straight to the dome of Galactus. The Ultimate Nullifer may be the only thing in the cosmos that actually frightens Galactus but odds are he never met a trash panda armed with a handgun.
Artist Chris Burnham drew this image in 2009, according to his social media. It gives a good idea of his irreverent sense of humor putting together characters that occupy similar space in the Marvel Universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy regularly face cosmic threats on the level of Galactus but this exact scenario would be unlikely to take place canonically in an issue of the comics. |
Amazing Spider-man #12, page 19
Featured: 11/2/2025
Owner Ron S
As Marvel Comics' flagship character, it bears to reason that Spider-Man also had the most impressive rogues gallery of villains to fight. Artist and co-creator Steve Ditko felt it was important to spend the first year of Spider-Man's existence establishing his world within the Marvel Universe and introducing new villains like the Vulture, the Sandman, the Lizard, and Electro all of which have withstood the test of time.
But his most engaging villain was Dr. Octopus, a scientist grafted with four mechanical arms after an experiment went wrong. This dynamic page shows their rooftop battle from issue #12, where Spider-Man dives straight in between Dr. Octopus' arms to get in close and a a stunned crowd of onlookers stare up at them. Ditko said in a statement in A Mini-History #5 (2002) "I had previously given [Stan Lee] the idea for a villain with four mechanical arms" but admits that Lee had come up with the name. |
Chrissie Zullo - Aang and Appa (Avatar The Last Airbender) - Convention Sketch [Fablescon]
Featured: 11/1/2025
Owner christopher h
This year marks the 20th anniversary since the first episode of the Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender aired. Chronicling the adventures of Aang, the last surviving member of the Air Nomads, he is accompanied by his faithful companion Appa, a flying sky bison. Seen here in a con sketch by artist Chrissie Zullo, Appa is a hybrid animal that is a mix of features from the horns and hair of an American bison, the tail of a manatee, and the six legs of an insect.
From the earliest inception of the show, Appa was part of the mythos. Co-creator Bryan Konietzko said in the Art of ATLA book, "I started drawing the bald, arrow-tattooed boy herding some bison-manatee creatures in the sky. I wasn't sure how the wings creatures could fly, but I didn't get in the way of the ideas and just let them flow onto the paper." As everyone knows, Zullo will make another appearance next February 20-22 for the third annual Original Art Expo (OAX) in Orlando, FL. Purchase your tickets and hotel rooms now via the website at the link. |
Batman the Long Halloween special original cover art by Tim Sale!
Featured: 10/31/2025
Owner Ryan Drobot
Since it was first published nearly thirty years ago The Long Halloween has been viewed as one of the watershed storylines in the Batman mythos. It certainly catapulted artist Tim Sale into the eyes of the audience as his style captured the noir tone of the murder mystery and the dark, shadowy corners of Gotham City. Sale re-teamed with his longtime collaborator Jeph Loeb on a 2021 special which produced this featured cover art and was intended as a soft launch for another mini-series. Here we find the Dark Knight swinging over the rooftops of Gotham with the skyline set at a dutch angle as a means of conveying the motion and perhaps a nod to the 60s television show which was notorious for tilting the camera.
"It was always intended to be the prologue for a much longer story," Loeb said to AIPT in an interview. "It was a way for us to get the rust out of the pipes and work together again." Sadly, Sale passed away in 2022 before the project could get off the ground. In tribute to his friend, Loeb and DC released The Last Halloween this past year with a collection of artists taking on each issue. |
Ghost Rider #50 pg 47 Pin Up
Featured: 10/30/2025
Owner Blaster H
Halloween is tomorrow, so naturally all the ghouls and goblins and Great Pumpkins are getting ready for their night to folic with the foolish mortals. For Ghost Rider this means he must be more vigilant than ever for any wayward demon escaping their eternal punishment. This pinup was drawn by Shawn McManus early in his career, the Spirit of Vengeance is shown seated on a tombstone in a spooky cemetery under the light of a full moon with a flock of bats flying overhead.
"By the time I broke into the business of drawing comics, there were very few mystery titles and lots of superhero titles mixed with some sci-fi and fantasy," McManus said in an interview with RetroFuturista. "Although I wasn't very good at illustrating superhero or sci-fi or fantasy, I did my best with the books I was lucky enough to have been given, which were very few mystery or horror titles. My first love has always been horror comics." |
Catwoman by Stephane Roux
Featured: 10/29/2025
Owner Anthony F
Today marks the twentieth anniversary since the establishment of National Cat Day, which promotes the adoption of stray cats and supporting animal shelters nationwide. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has resources available on their website for anyone inclined to donate or adopt.
One character who would certainly support this initiative is Catwoman, seen here dressed in her Golden Age costume in a commission by French artist Stephane Roux. Being a cat burglar is really just a means of supporting her addiction to hoarding all the cats she finds lost or abandoned in the alleys of Gotham City. Almost as committed to her feline motif as Batman is to his, she carries a cat o'nine tails as her weapon of choice. As everyone knows, Roux came on the CAF+ channel last night to announce his pre-show commission list for the third annual Original Art Expo (OAX) on February 20-22 in Orlando, FL. Sign up now on the website to claim one for yourself. |
Frankenstein page 141 by Berni Wrightson
Featured: 10/28/2025
Owner Albert Moy
Just in time for Halloween, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has brought the classic tale of Frankenstein back to the big screen for a limited time. As both a lifelong horror fan and art aficionado, del Toro has cited the illustrated adaptation of Mary Shelley's original novel by comics legend Bernie Wrightson as one of the visual inspirations for his version.
"What I was trying to capture is the beautiful style of the illustrations of an American artist called Bernie Wrightson, who illustrated for me the best illustrated version of the novel ever, and who collaborated with me earlier on," Del Toro told Terry Gross last week in an interview on NPR's Fresh Air. This featured page depicts the mad doctor working on his creation in a lab filled with beakers, surgeon tools, and even an axe. Wrightson inked the piece in a manner to give the doctor and his creature a type of spotlight so they appear to glow in dark confines of the laboratory. Pieces from this book are in high demand by collectors as some of the finest examples of the medium. |
Star Wars: Twilight #21 Page 11 by Jan Duursema
Featured: 10/27/2025
Owner Christopher Swanson
As a prolific Star Wars of the early 21st century, Jan Duursema has a lock on the look and feeling of a scene from a galaxy far, far away. Like many Jedi before him, Quinlan Vos is torn between his personal relationships and following his duties to the Republic. While trying to reestablish his lost memories while speaking to his cousin Asante Vos, he is interrupted by a holographic call from Vilmarh Grahrk, a disreputable Devaronian smuggler, with a lead forcing him to once again fulfill his dedication to the Jedi. Duursema captures the mood of the moment well in the figures’ body language, especially Asante in the background of the final panel.
Just recently, Duursema and her husband Tom Mandrake were involved in a car accident which left her with a broken arm. While it luckily was not her drawing arm, she posted to social media that she will need surgery this week. On behalf of the CAF community, we extend our best wishes to Duursema on a speedy recovery. |
